About this listen

The more I thought about it, the more I realised my career has been unusual. How did I manage to do everything wrong but still end up on the front cover of magazines, headlining world tours and achieving Top Five albums? How did I attract such obsessive and fanatical fans, many of whom take everything I do or say very personally, which is simultaneously flattering but can also be tremendously frustrating? Even this I somehow cultivated without somehow meaning to. My accidental career.

Limited Edition of One is unlike any other music book you will ever have hear.

Part the long-awaited memoir of Steven Wilson, whose celebrated band Porcupine Tree began as teenage fiction before unintentionally evolving into a reality that encompassed Grammy-nominated records and sold-out shows around the world, before he set out for an even more successful solo career.

Part the story of a 21st-century artist who achieved chart-topping mainstream success without ever becoming part of the mainstream. From Abba to Stockhausen, via a collection of conversations and thought pieces on the art of listening, the rules of collaboration, lists of lists, personal stories, professional adventurism (including food, film, TV, modern art), old school rock stardom, how to negotiate an obsessive fanbase and survive on social media and dream-fever storytelling.

I loved the insights into Steven's thought processes and concerns about crafting music. Thumbs up!

I like Steven Wilson, he seems self deprecating and fully aware of the ridiculous world he's found himself in. Great insights on creating music and being a music fan. I was taken aback that he doesn't seem to rate himself as a guitarist because when i first heard PT in 1995 or thereabouts me snd my friends were like bloody hell this guy's amazing! The chapters with Mick Wall were a little weird, like they'd recorded a conversation, transcribed it, heavily edited it, then read it back again. They should have just included the original conversation, I'm sure we could have handled it, we all listen to podcasts these days. Also for some reason I don't like the way Mick enunciates the title "Future Bytes". Anyhow it's a good book, highly recommended.

Written by someone who writes beautiful, intense lyrics, this book completely met my expectation. No actually, it exceeded my expectations. I have been listening to Steven Wilson’s music for many years, initially recommended by my son. This book took me back to the years of saving my pocket money and buying my first records from Woolworths and Our Price Records.
Brilliantly written, beautifully read and with the guest appearance, a genius idea, it really touched me in the same way that Steven’s music has for many years.
Even if you have never heard of Steven Wilson, you should hear this book. A time warping, yet futuristic, wisely written book.

Unsurprisingly great literature

Though a massive Steven Wilson fan, I dropped off his last few albums. I saw this pop up and thought I'd give it a listen... and I am so glad I did!

Very interesting and well narrated, it is great hearing things from his perspective and background.

I remembered how much of an inspiration he was to me on my own musical journey and now I am very much looking forward to catching up on his discography!

Recommended!

I feel compelled to write a review for this audiobook, because it deserves one. It's a fantastic insight into the life of Steven Wilson, and his journey to date.
At first the addition of Mick Wall seemed somewhat scripted, I soon realised it's what other audiobooks lack at times; being able to coax a conversation about topics like his solo career or social media for music artists that I think maybe Steven wouldn't have discussed in such depth otherwise.
It leaves me excited to see what the future holds for Steven's future career, both for me and Steven himself.
