Summary

Rachel Smedling is not like the other women in her isolated Pennine village: she is taller, stronger, and weaves cloth like a man. Without her, the household would fall apart, for her mother is ailing and her vicious drunkard father seems to hate her so much, he would happily offer money to any man who would wed her.

When her mother dies, Rachel is at the mercy of her increasingly violent father.

Her only escape is marrying a kindly man with whom she finds happiness, if not passion, and her life begins to seem complete.

Rachel's growing prosperity infuriates her father and his cronies, however, and they will stop at nothing to see her destroyed.

Like No Other

Loved it! These books, written by Anna Jacobs, get better every time I listen to one and Nicolette McKenzie is such a good narrator.

The narrator was great.

Enjoyed hearing this narrator. The story overall was good but I found that it contained rather alot of violence, lots of 'beating up' and aggression especially towards the female lead part. For that reason I didn't enjoy the book as much as I'd of liked to.

Well drawn characters.

This book transported me to a time when women had very few rights and the gentry had power. The characters were well drawn and complex. There were trials and tribulations for the main character but the glimmer of a happy ending kept me listening.

what a awesome book

this story give the readers/listeners just about everything laughter sadness and surprises I hate that men would treat women the way those men did the narrator did a great job with all the voices the only thing I didn't like was the end I still don't know how they catch the thieves but over all a great story
