About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

19-year-old Phoebe and her courier father Al have recently moved to Devon, to a small cottage with a river at the end of the garden.

Struggling with her health, Phoebe doesn't go out much these days. Instead, she spends her time playing detective - trying to deduce from her father's deliveries what kinds of lives her neighbours lead.

When Phoebe finds an abandoned baby otter by the river, it's just the push she needs to finally step into her new community. Taking the otter to the local sanctuary, she feels a joy that she has not felt in a very long time. But she soon starts to suspect that something is amiss at the local sanctuary - and she will need to put her detective skills to good use if she wants to save the otters.

A gorgeous feel-good novel about a young woman finding the courage to step back into the world, with the help of new friends and some very cute otters.

Critic reviews

Vivid and very real . . . Packed full of humanity and otters, plus a good mystery too!
Uplifting, heartwarming and wonderful, an utterly charming story - I loved it! Another gorgeous book from Hazel Prior to lose yourself in!
Life and Otter Miracles is a warm-hearted and uplifting story which celebrates the power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit. With a cast of beautifully-drawn characters and a delightful small-town mystery as its heart, this is a story that readers will be sure to fall in love with. Otterly charming!
A joyous addition for bookshelves everywhere. Nature lovers and readers looking for a warm-hearted, touching read are sure to love it as much as I did.
An otter JOY! Amazing characters, cute otters, clever plot, emotion, the beauty and perils of the countryside beautifully evoked. If you want to be happy, read this book!
I love everything Hazel writes. She creates worlds I want to live in, with people I would be friends (and enemies) with. The Tiptree's raspberry jam on artisan sourdough toast of a comfort read.
Completely absorbing . . . Stunning scenery, intriguing characters and of course, those wonderful otters. A life-enhancing book that constantly tugs at the heartstrings but still overflows with joy. I adored it!
Warm and uplifting . . . gorgeously comforting
Warm, moving and escapist in the best feel-good way, I loved everything about this novel. Another incredible read from Prior.

Very enjoyable story and characters. However I didn’t like the reader whose intonation and emphasis were quite off. I will buy the book and enjoy my own inner voice reading it.

Heartwarming story

I really enjoyed the story. It was interesting to listen to a story with a portrayal of someone with chronic pain, not the kid of character that often takes the lead in the book, but a reality of life for many of us.

Nice, interesting listen

The narrator didn’t do the story justice which was a shame. Also Hazel’s other books have been brilliant and although this was a good plot it was a bit repetitive and slow moving in parts.

An enjoyable story but …

Not only was the story childlike but the reader sounded like she was reading to a child. Very disappointed .. nothing like Away With The Penguins.

Like a child’s book
