A good story however a star knocked off because it was hard to follow at times.

This was excellent! My first read of Owen King’s work and I’ll definitely be checking out more after this! This is an intense and creepy short story about a teenager whose growing concern for his ailing mother and their financial difficulties prompts him to unknowingly reach out to something. As the story progresses, the eeriness ramps up and it really had me gripped the entire time! Read this via Audible and the narrator performed it really well too. This is the third story I’ve read in the Shivers collection and I’ve genuinely enjoyed each of them equally so far. Definitely recommend if you want a quick horror story that is bleak and unsettling!

A concept that’s been done a million times before, but still a good take on the “monkey’s paw” trope.

It’s not scary, but the story is well told. It lacks suspense yet somehow still holds the promise that a twist or consequence is just on the other side of the door. The twist probably isn’t what I expected, but that’s likely because it’s not a twist that I didn’t really care about.

It was fine as a light read - unremarkable but not bad.
