Summary

London, 1892 - Cyrus Barker is brought into a game of international espionage by the Prime Minister himself in the newest mystery in Will Thomas's beloved series.

Private enquiry agents Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn receive in the mail an unexplained key stamped with the letter Q. Barker, recognizing it for what it is, uses the key to unlock an anonymous door in the alleyway, which opens to an underground tunnel leading to Downing Street.

The Prime Minister has a small task for Cyrus Barker. A Foreign Office agent stole a satchel in Eastern Europe, but was then himself murdered at Charing Cross. The satchel contains a document desperately wanted by the German government, but while the agent was killed, the satchel remains in English hands. With a cold war brewing between England and Germany, it's in England's interest to return the document contained in the satchel to its original owners and keep it out of German hands.

The document is an unnamed first century gospel; the original owner is the Vatican. And the German government isn't the only group trying to get possession of it. With secret societies, government assassins, political groups, and shadowy figures of all sorts doing everything they can - attacks, murders, counter-attacks, and even massive street battles - to acquire the satchel and its contents, this small task might be beyond even the prodigious talents of Cyrus Barker.

Will Thomas does it again

Yet another great yarn by Will Thomas. The series has become family, with each character identifiable and superbly characterised by Antony Ferguson. There are few better narrators and few better writers. I like an easy listen to escape into. Bravo Barker and Llewelyn

A small niggle

I have listened to all the Barker and Llewelyn books on Audible and enjoyed them. However, I understand the author is American which explains why he uses some americanisms like [gotten] we say got. [Suspenders] braces etc.
This might seem a bit picky but he's obviously looked into British history so I think it would be more believable if he got these small details right

Absolutely fab series

I discovered the first Barker and Llewelyn book at the start of lockdown in the UK and I have rapidly listened to the whole series during that period.

Will Thomas writes so superbly that I was transferred to a bygone era with such amazing detail! Not only did I find a series full of Murder plots, drama and fast paced action, but I also found that each book taught me more about the politics and history of that time.

The characters were given life thanks to the amazing narration of Antony Ferguson and he even made the comical moments shine through.

This series has everything you could want from a book and I am so gutted to have just finished the last one in the series so far, I feel like I’m saying Farewell to old familiar freinds!!

I can only hope that just as lockdown caused me to find this series, Will Thomas May have decided to write some more!!

Stay Safe everyone :-)
