Ward resurrects an enslaved girl out of the lost folds of the antebellum South, twists magic through every raindrop, mushroom and stalk of sugarcane, and drops you into the middle of her harrowing, unendurable, magnificent song. This is a gripping, mythic, bone-pulverizing descent into the grim darkness of American slavery – and yet somehow this novel simultaneously leaves you in awe of the human capacity to not only endure, but to ascend back to the light. An outstanding read

Wow! What an amazing story. This author has described this story so well that the detail in her description on every page is rich and vivid. This was my first audio book and I loved every moment. The authors voice also worked really well, I loved how she spoke and did not over do the expression, every thing was just the right amount. I highly recommend this story. It’s heartfelt, emotional, raw and powerful telling of a sad time in history.
