Book 7 in the stand alone series based around the Northern Michigan Asylum for the Insane, and, like the earlier books, atmospheric, unexpected and with good characterization.
Jake Edwards is a pretty ordinary guy with commitment issues. Already in his late 40s, he runs his own excavation business, employing several men and Barbie, his 50 something motherly secretary receptionist. On the first anniversary of his most recent relationship, an unknown woman comes to his office, introducing herself as Petra and asking if he remembers her. He doesn't, and is shocked when she tells him that they were close childhood friends whilst resident at the Northern Mitchigan Asylum as he has absolutely no memory of ever having been there. He suspects that someone is playing a prank on him - until Petra's apartment is found awash with blood, and she had disappeared. Under possible suspicion of murder, Jake investigates. Meanwhile, a second story runs alongside that of Jake's forgotten past, the two coming together later in the book.

Alan Carlson, who narrated, gives a fine lerformance, his reading clear, well modulated but unintrusive, without over emphasis, letting the reader fill in the emotional content of the text. His background approach somehow emphasises and makes all the more dramatic what is written. He also gives individual voice to each character.
From the domestic normalcy of the opening to the violent finale, this book maintained my interest and involvement. Well written and expertly read, this was a most enjoyable book. My thanks to the rights holder of Let Her Rest, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. Recommended even to all who enjoy murder mysteries even those who are usually somewhat wary of the inclusion of the paranormal, this book has a fine, chi!long presence throughout combined with a normality which firmly grips the reader's attention and immagination. as one of the characters comments, "More complex than an Agatha Christie novel".
Good writing and fine narrating.
Recommended.
