About this listen

'If deaths are not investigated, then the authorities cannot be held to account and democracy is threatened. And if deaths are not investigated, we are not a society that values human life.'

Inspired from a young age to help the marginalised and voiceless, Leslie Thomas KC has dedicated his career to fighting for the underdog and holding the State to account. This intimate and personal record of some of the most significant, controversial and disturbing legal cases of the last fifty years lays bare the very heart of the law enforcement and judicial process.

It's an unforgettable account of an idealistic and outspoken lawyer's coming of age as a Black man in London, and a powerful portrait of the lives of those he has fought for. From the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, to the deaths of Christi and Bobby Shepherd by carbon monoxide poisoning, the Birmingham Pub Bombings and the police shooting of Mark Duggan, Do Right and Fear No One present a blistering argument for a level playing field in the pursuit of justice.©2022 Leslie Thomas, QC. Having read all of the Secret Barrister books I had become somewhat despondent as to the prospects for the UK Justice system, be that Civil or Criminal. Knowing that Barristers such as Lesley Thomas KC still exist is therefore very reassuring. It’s also an encouraging book for any parent whose child is going off the rails a little when it comes to academic achievement: It can still work out well, as Lesley’s book is testament to.

Okay for the legal details re becoming a barrister and the old boys network. Some of the book grabbed me others I skipped so it’s really a pick and mix book. It did give me a better idea surrounding the extra problems he had because of his skin colour. I thought it was well read. Bought as a BOGOF.

Useful for learning about becoming a barrister

I found this book by chance on the Gresham site just before holiday.
The 1st week of my holiday has been made by this book and more importantly this man. It has been illuminating and interesting. I am as proud as your mum of your achievements. A great life, well lived, based on the very best qualities of humans. Thank you for opening my eyes.

A great read by a great human being

Professor Leslie Thomas QC’s detailed account of his legal career as a practitioner in the field of coroners’ inquests relating to deaths in custody.
Professor Thomas specialised in these cases, and outlined his involvement in numerous cases.

His record has been excellent.

Well recommended.
