 Le crociate furono una serie di guerre, combattute tra l'XI e il XIII secolo, fra eserciti di regni, principati cristiani europei ed eserciti musulmani prevalentemente sul terreno dell'Anatolia, nel Medio Oriente (Gerusalemme) e nel Nord Africa (Tunisia ed Egitto).

L'audiolibro percorre la storia di queste spedizioni militari a partire dall'appello di Clermont nel 1095 di papa Urbano II come risposta al pericolo dell'invasione Selgiuchide nell'impero bizantino. Anche se esse furono benedette e spesso invocate dal Papato e motivate da un sentimento eminentemente religioso che intendeva liberare dall'occupazione musulmana la terra dove nacque, predicò e morì Gesù, non si trattava propriamente di guerre di religione, dato che lo scopo non fu mai quello di costringere i musulmani a cambiare religione.

Le armi, con cui i Crociati partirono e che impiegarono in Terrasanta, poco avevano a che fare con la religione, quanto piuttosto con un desiderio di conquista e di colonizzazione di vasti territori mediterranei e orientali.
