About this listen

Antarctica, June 6th, 1998: 23-year-old Matt Lewis has just started his dream job: an observer aboard a deep-sea fishing boat. As the crew haul in their lines for the day, the waves seem bigger than usual - they are casting shadows on the deck. A storm is brewing. What follows is an astonishing story of courage and tragedy. Lewis leads the escape onto three life rafts, where the battle for survival begins.

Excellent book and very true as I was one of the Royal Engineers on South Georgia and I made the cross for those lost at sea. I also made the plaque with the life jacket on it that the survivors signed.

Very good reading

Good book but a little disjointed moved. A bit slow at times but altogether a great story well read I think

The description of the fishing was excellent.
I had little sympathy for the author who was much too self centred

Although some depictions of my father felt exaggerated and far removed from the caring man that he was, under such extreme conditions, decisions were made. Some heartbreaking moments and a complete failure of the commercial fishing industry as a whole…I was supposed to join on this trip and my father pulled me out for the potential dangers of those waters.
Hard to listen to indeed, but to hear about his last moments provided some necessary comfort and closure as this changed the course of our lives.
The narrator’s various accents were a tough listen though.
A Tragic story for all involved! Love and Strength to the families of those who were lost and to those who survived! hope to visit the memorial on South Georgia one day!

I lost my father in this tragedy.

If you could sum up Last Man Off in three words, what would they be?

rivetting, gripping, informative

Who was your favorite character and why?

Matt Lewis - he was the main character and he tells an incredible story.

Which character – as performed by Malcolm Hamilton – was your favourite?

Matt Lewis. Malcolm Hamilton did an excellent job, but being a South African myself we had a good laugh at the numerous South African accents he attempted - they are very hard to get right!

Any additional comments?

This audio book has had my whole family gripped - even my 11 and 14 year old sons. Such an incredible story and it is hard to stop listening. It made a long car trip fly by way too quickly.

Incredible story for the whole family
