A very strange and unusual story about a young couple, not long married and still very much in love, out for a stroll together one day when the wife, Sylvia, suddenly and for no given reason, turns into a fox..

And although this sounds like the beginning of a humorous story, it's far from that...

At first, both husband and vixen try to sustain the 'normal married life' they enjoyed pre-transformation, rising, washing, dressing and taking breakfast seated at the table, and playing piquette together in the evening...but gradually Sylvia becomes more and more fox, and less and less human, and although she seems at ease with the changes, her poor husband's troubles are just beginning...

Overall, this is a tragedy, definitely not humorous and deeply strange from beginning to end. I won't tell you anymore about the story because that would be firstly, unnecessary and secondly I don't want to spoil new readers / listeners experience...

I have read this in print, and listened to it in about 4 versions - 5 including the dramatised Radio 4 Extra version, which I love, and my only criticism of this reading is that I didn't like the narrator's voice one bit, and in fact had to turn it down to 80% to make it bearable !

Overall, however, I strongly recommend that everyone read this right away. For one thing, it's free right now ('included in your membership' at least !) It's such an oddly sad and beautiful story, you need to read it at least once, even if you hate it. And you can always fiddle with the narrator pitch and speed if, like me, Flo Gibson drives you mad !
