About this listen

When Aurelie Harcourt's father dies in debtor's prison, he leaves her just two things: his wealthy family, whom she has never met, and his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll. Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company.

When Aurelie decides to complete her father's unfinished serial novel, writing the family into the story as unflattering characters, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother's disappearance - and perhaps even her father's death.

Author Joanna Davidson Politano's stunning debut set in Victorian England will delight listeners with its highly original plot, lush setting, vibrant characters, and reluctant romance.

Hard to get into and I did wonder where it was going, but worth the effort. There was plenty of surprises and unexpected twists and turns to this story!

Could not get into the story at all Very disappointing Like the narrator though

Gave up on it

My mistake, I didn't realise this was 'Christian fiction'.
initially I was interested in the plot - a clever idea - but I'm afraid the increasing references to God and biblical quotations began to intrude on my interest.
I didn't finish it.

I absolutely adore this story. The plot is probably my favorite part. If you are tired of the 'one main character and one obvious love interest' trope then this is for you. I also love how she is writing a story in the story, you get to understand what goes into the character development and plot of a book.
The way she works God into this story is also so perfect. Not a threatening, in your face proclamation that this is a Christian book. Just a girl's natural relationship with the Lord, and learning to trust Him.
I love how the characters were made so real and flawed. Even the antagonists are shown to be human, with deep hurts and unexpected stories. I especially like Nel's story, and how you wanted her to be just as happy as the main characters.
The descriptions were beautiful-coming from someone who often skips boring descriptions to 'just get to the action'.
I'm not one for mystery or thrillers, but this book brought enough of that in to stun and intrigue me. Definitely recommend.
The Narration was brilliant of course, as expected from Justine Eyre.

Thank you Audible and Joanna J. Politano for sharing this Fantastic Masterpiece with the world.❤
