About this listen

A mistress. A mountain of debt. A mysterious wreck of a building.

Delilah Swanpoole, Countess of Derring, learns the hard way that her husband, “Dear Dull Derring,” is a lot more interesting—and perfidious—dead than alive. It’s a devil of an inheritance, but in the grand ruins of the one building Derring left her, are the seeds of her liberation. And she vows never again to place herself at the mercy of a man.

But battle-hardened Captain Tristan Hardy is nothing if not merciless. When the charismatic naval hero tracks a notorious smuggler to a London boarding house known as the Rogue’s Palace, seducing the beautiful, blue-blooded proprietress to get his man seems like a small sacrifice.

They both believe love is a myth. But a desire beyond reason threatens to destroy the armor around their hearts. Now a shattering decision looms: Will Tristan betray his own code of honor…or choose a love that might be the truest thing he’s ever known?

…as Justine Eyre always delivers. The story felt like it lagged. Maybe not enough conflict? Or the MCs were less interesting than the supporting characters? I wasn’t smitten with either Delilah or Tristan — they were fine. The Grand Palace on the Thames felt like it would have great atmosphere, but otherwise, this book felt flat.

Fab narration

Genuinely cannot understand why this hasn’t been reviewed better. Julie Anne Long is probably one of my favourite HR writers... and this rivals Pennyroyal Green for me. She flawlessly weaves humor, romance, very steamy sex, and a compelling narrative that really is hard to rival. This is no different. I really liked Tristan, because he was unusual. He wasn’t a seducer, a rogue, or even particularly interested in women... which is different from most HR heroes. Delilah was a joy and also very sharp witted, again making her a little different from the usual heroine. They were wonderfully matched and the story is excellently paced. As usual, Justine Eyre is impeccable, ruining all of narrators for me forever. Something about her male voices and delivery is perfect. Highly recommend this listen, and can’t wait for Angelique’s story now!

Omg I loved this

It started out quite promisingly and descended into absolute nonsense. £10 night for a room in a docklands boarding house would equate to £1,210 today. Two sovereigns is £2 and worth a lot less than £10. I wish writers would do their homework.

Hit but mostly miss
