Summary

Mme Tellier, tenancière d'une maison de passe dans une petite ville de Normandie, Fécamp, a emmené ses filles de joie à la première communion de sa nièce dans un petit village de campagne. Elles s'y font remarquer, non seulement par leurs toilettes urbaines, mais aussi par leur émotion : très sincèrement émues par la cérémonie, elles pleurent, et communiquent leur émotion à toute l'assemblée. Elles passent ainsi pour profondément dévotes ! 

Les premiers mots de cette nouvelle : "On allait là, chaque soir, vers onze heures, comme au café, simplement. Ils s'y retrouvaient à six ou huit, toujours les mêmes, non pas des noceurs, mais des hommes honorables, des commerçants, des jeunes gens de la ville ; et l'on prenait sa chartreuse en lutinant quelque peu les filles, ou bien on causait sérieusement avec Madame, que tout le monde respectait. Puis on rentrait se coucher avant minuit. Les jeunes gens quelquefois restaient".
