L'Autore descrive in versi liberi la storia di come Buddha, il Principe Siddharta, dopo la grande rinuncia, ottenne l'illuminazione. Il poema, che, pubblicato nel 1879, ebbe un immediato successo soprattutto in Inghilterra e America, e fu tradotto in trenta lingue, compreso in Hindi, è un libero adattamento del Lalitavistara Sutra, che racconta la storia di Gautama Buddha fino al suo primo sermone nel Parco dei Cervi vicino a Varanasi.
Prima della pubblicazione del libro, poco si sapeva fuori dell'Asia del Buddha e del Buddhismo, e il libro di Arnold contribuì grandemente a diffondere questa conoscenza in Occidente.
