Summary

A dark France

The world of petty criminals and big drug dealers. Patience Portefeux is a translator for Arabic speaking people appearing in court in Paris, later of tapped phones. Her personal life has been marked by tragedy; her husband died suddenly after a few years of marriage, leaving her penniless with two wee daughters. Her father, a pied-noir is a crook, and her mother a Viennese Jew who was incarcerated by the Nazis and has withdrawn from life, and is now a financial burden, growing progressively more demented in a seedy care home. Somehow Patience becomes drawn into the world of drug trafficking to become « La Daronne » - the godmother. A milieu of which I knew nothing,(from literature) at least when France is concerned. Intriguing.
