Summary

A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick

FORECAST: Storm clouds are on the horizon in L.A. Weather, a fun, fast-paced novel of a Mexican-American family from the author of the #1 Los Angeles Times bestseller Esperanza’s Box of Saints

L.A. is parched, dry as a bone, and all Oscar, the weather-obsessed patriarch of the Alvarado family, desperately wants is a little rain. He’s harboring a costly secret that distracts him from everything else. His wife, Keila, desperate for a life with a little more intimacy and a little less Weather Channel, feels she has no choice but to end their marriage. Their three daughters - Claudia, a television chef with a hard-hearted attitude; Olivia, a successful architect who suffers from gentrification guilt; and Patricia, a social media wizard who has an uncanny knack for connecting with audiences but not with her lovers - are blindsided and left questioning everything they know. Each will have to take a critical look at her own relationships and make some tough decisions along the way.

With quick-wit and humor, Maria Amparo Escandón follows the Alvarado family as they wrestle with impending evacuations, secrets, deception, and betrayal, and their toughest decision yet: whether to stick together or burn it all down.

Pleasant

This is a nice, heartwarming family story but not a page turner. I’m glad I stuck it out, jt has some wonderful messages but not the best I’ve read recently.

Beautiful Story

I purchased this book on the release date. There were not any reviews written so I went based on the story description. I loved this story and it was also beautifully read.

DNF and wanted to return this book!

I wanted to love this book. As a native Californian Latina, I was thrilled that Reese selected this book. But unfortunately I couldn't connect with the characters, the arc of this story, any of it. I've never written a negative review before and I have over 200 tittles on audible, but I was so disappointed in this book. So many of the free stories on audible have been so much better.

Must Read

The author has a vast imagination. She weaves into a human story many pieces of history and culture and does it in a very entertaining way.

Waiting for the sequel

Love the characters, story and narration. The story was sweet and soulful. And the words brought the family and LA to life. Can’t wait for the next installment. I’m invested in these people!!!

Very good story, but…

I enjoyed the story very much but for me when a story goes to saving the environment and buying solar farms to save the world, a story feels a little preachy to me. And so turned me off a little bit. That’s just me.

Family Drama

This book, set in 2016, is about family, and how hard it is to keep things together.

A lot of this story made me think of a soap opera, just not as dramatic. The family struggles to keep from falling apart during LA's worst drought to date. People lied, people were selfish, and communication was constantly ignored.

While the wild fires grew close, so did the ultimate struggles they had been keeping from each other.

This was definitely not my type of book as it is 90% character driven, but the writing is beautiful and still managed to keep my attention.

For the story, it's a 3⭐, since it's not my cup of tea, but the delivery of this story is 4.5⭐. Beautifully done.

Holy never-ending audio book, Batman!

I hate to say it, but I just didn't like any of the main characters. They were so narcissistic and self-absorbed that I didn't care what happened to them. They weren't really bad people, but they certainly weren't good either. The only likeable people in the whole book were Lola, the nanny, who was the only adult who had any sense, and Dani. And the twins, I guess, but they were just toddlers. I almost liked Oscar, the poor father who is clearly depressed but no one can pull their head out of their own bum long enough to notice, until I finally found out his big secret, and he turned out to be just as ridiculous as the rest of them.

This book just dragged on and on, and the juicy things that were happening to these people should have been interesting, but it all just fell flat somehow. The writer's style is also very straightforward and expository, not much style, so there's not even that to fall back on. I guess there was interesting information here, about LA and Mexico and the Alvarado's Californio heritage. One redeeming point. I could keep ranting about how bad this book was, but it's already taken up way too much of my time. Save your credit, don't waste it on this trash fire.

😏

I get this book was about happening with a family but I’m really not sure what this book was about. For me there is no point to this book. It’s a bunch of things that don’t really mean anything. Things happening in LA which I don’t necessarily agree with. Would not recommend it because it’s meh

Confusing and Aimless

I’ll start with a positive, the narrator has a very soothing voice and her accent when she pronounces Spanish words is beautiful. She does a great job!

The story, however, is just so confusing and aimless. I couldn’t connect with, understand, or respect any of the main characters. It was not believable to me that three successful, intelligent women would seriously move back in with their parents and be comfortable being “sister mommies”. It felt like the author was trying to address every topical social and political issue into one story, and the political commentary, especially, was so pointless and unnecessary. The characters lack depth and many of the story lines just fall flat. Skip this one if you’re considering reading it!

Not my favorite

I was a little disappointed in this one. I kept listening thinking it would get better but it didn’t.
