About this listen

Toby Clements's fourth and final instalment in the Kingmaker historical series, set during England's bloody and brutal War of the Roses.

1470. The recent tensions between King Edward and his great ally the Earl of Warwick lie forgotten these past months, but even as winter tightens her grip on the land, the peace is shattered by a vicious attack on one of the King's allies.

Long buried secrets are brought to the surface, and Thomas and Katherine must finally decide where their loyalties lie and to choose between fight or flight, knowing either choice will incur a terrible price.

From Lincoln to Bruges, from Barnet to the great battle at Tewkesbury, both must play their part in one of the most savage wars in history: The War of the Roses.

"Toby Clements captures the grimness, grit and grime of 15th-century life, but with compassion and humanity, as seen through the eyes of common people...." ( Daily Mail)

Over the course of three books, the reader was taken on the journey with Katherine and Thomas, evoking a vivid picture of the chaotic years of the War of the Roses; for the nobility, but more interestingly for the common men and women who had to take part, one way or the other.

Book four, Kingdom Come, is the last instalment. The mystery surrounding Katherine's origin is finally revealed, the conflict between King Edward IV. and the Kingmaker, Earl Warwick, comes to a dramatic end, as does the cause of Lancastrian force.

Once again, Toby Clements brings the fates of kings and commoners wonderfully together. It's gripping, exciting, heartbreaking and everything in between. If only it weren't for the ending which was too rushed.

More importantly, as we all know, the War of the Roses doesn't end with Margaret of Anjou's and her son's defeat, but with the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. I hope the author may come back and take us on a last journey with Katherine and Thomas.

A special mention has to go to the Jack Hawkins whose narration is excellent. Just wow!

Excellent but for the ending

I like to think I knew this period of history quite well, however this series of books has brought it to life. I have thoroughly enjoyed them , and also the final epilogue that puts forward various scenarios , as to what could have happened if certain things had not .
Well done for this brilliant series .

We'll done Toby, it is a magnificent series of books 1-4 and worth every minute of the pains taking time you must have spent in writing them! Ten out of ten ☺ and lots of credit to, to Jack Hawkins who gave a truly excellent narration!!!
