Summary

In the summer of 1976, the nation's capital is gearing up for the Bicentennial. Captain Beefheart's on the eight-track, and the hot new film "King Suckerman" has everyone talking. Two knockaround guys named Clay and Karras are out looking for trouble when they stumble onto a drug deal gone bad and end up with a pile of money that isn't theirs. When the well-armed dealer starts spilling blood to get to the cash, Clay and Karras must take a stand, go straight, and get justice--or maybe just sweet revenge. I’ve read King Suckerman a few times over the years and it’s still as good as ever.

It’s the second in the author’s DC Quartet and the first with Dimitri Karras and Marcus Clay. Set in 70s Washington DC, it follows the two as they get pulled deeper into the city’s criminal world. Gritty, real, no nonsense. Strong characters throughout.

The Audible version works. Cary Hite is superb and really brings the whole thing to life.

Good to see The Sweet Forever is on there as well with the same narrator.

Only surprise is there isn’t more of Pelecanos on Audible. There should be.

Well worth a listen.

Top book, top narration.
