Summary

A storm is brewing in the heartlands of America and John Milton senses something in the air....

John Milton has a nose for trouble. He can smell it a mile away. And when he witnesses a suspicious altercation between a young man and two thugs in a car auction parking lot, he can’t resist getting involved. Milton came to Kansas City hoping to find a way out of danger. His recent vendetta against a cartel hitman who killed his friend has made him enemies in high places. Now he needs to find the only man who can get him out of this mess. But, like a moth to a flame, Milton is drawn to anyone who needs his help. And this time, he’s also drawing the attention of money laundering criminals who really mean business. Driven by a desire to atone for the darkness in his past, Milton is a man on a mission. But, in a city of undercover crime and corruption, what does that mean for his future? With danger all around him, will Milton’s burning conscience finally be the death of him?

not drinking the koolaid on this one...

Never read a Milton book before and never will sgain either. Bought the book on a sale and based on a 4.8 star rating from thousands of reviews, surely a slam dunk winner right?! Wrong.
While I do like the genre, this book felt like the cookie cutter approach to writing a spy/agent novel. Disgruntled agent turned "good" - check. Trouble finds him as easy as flies find crap - check. Overlay with ridiculous coincidences and conveniences - check. Here you have your masterpiece. when Milton can jump out a window that's boarded up and drop 40 feet into a dumpster filled with insulation that he never knew was there, that sums the writing up for you.
The narrator was disappointing at every level. his voice was like Jon Ronson and more suited to reading non-fiction, factual text. First issue with him is its lazy not to check place names and then mispronounce them for the whole book. 2 minutes on Google would tell you Clondalkin in Dublin is pronounced Clon-daw-kin, not Clon-dahl-kin. Pure laziness.
second issue is the Dublin accent is very distinct but the narrator chooses to try the begorrah bejaysus bull caka oirish accent and can't even do that without slipping into northern Ireland, Australia and other rubbish.
Same with American accents, he can't hold them and listening to some characters is like a tour of 20 states. if you can't do an accent don't do an accent . lucky to get 1 star.
all in all, I endured it and finished it but these series are a dime a dozen and have their own cult followings... this character is not for me

What we all want to know

I rarely write reviews; but I've now binge listened to every single book from the start. I'd picked up a couple and then started following in series. it's been just over a year and I've solely listened to this series. I've been getting really nervous that it was coming to an end! however, what a treat it was to hear the interview at the end!!!! It was fantastic to hear writer and narrator talk to eachother and voice exactly what I've been thinking which is I'm always amazed at the authenticity of the stories and their granular details AND how each character literally comes to life through an accent SO well done that you have to remind yourself that it's ONE narrator. I'm flabbergasted to imagine a person that's so adept at coming in and out of characters; let alone the accents.. what a skill! and yes you're right Mark; it would be a hanging offence to change David! but also I'm sure I'm not the only listener that would consider a "Misery" style ambush if you stopped writing about John Milton 😂 Thank you for all the amazing adventures and keeping me sane over lockdown. I'm behind John all the way!

Superb from start to finish

I listened to all of Marks John Milton books and have enjoyed everyone, as I've explained to Mark on his Facebook page I drive a lot and this gives me the perfect escape to listen and Marks books on Audible help eat into the miles. They are both well written and narrated so it's win win.

Roll on 2021 for the next adventure of John Milton 🤔🤔

Milton

A brilliant and a gripping book to read but especially to hear in audible and once again a class book.

Classic Milton

Thought I might struggle with this story at the start with mix of the accents the Narrator dealt with so well. I needn't have bothered, this is classic Milton. I enjoyed the story but there is a nice surprise after the epilogue.

Another fantastic Milton book

Probably one of the most 'unputdownable' novels in the series, I pretty much listened non-stop. Characters are great. Only downside was that Ellie Flowers didn't actually appear though she was mentioned. She always manages to make Milton just a little uncomfortable.

Fantastic narration as ever. I also really enjoyed the conversation recorded between Mark Dawson and David Thorpe that follows the book. A must listen all round. Can't wait to get Ronin in my library.

Brilliant

Can't wait for the next. Brilliant as always. John Milton story should be made into a film or Netflix series.....as long as the actor sounds just like David Thorpe!!

Fantastic. As always

Really good story. Brilliantly narrated. The amount of research that goes into these books is staggering!
