Summary

Bringing 16th century Languedoc vividly to life, Kate Mosse's The Burning Chambers is a gripping story of love and betrayal, mysteries and secrets; of war and adventure, conspiracies and divided loyalties....

Carcassonne, 1562: 19-year-old Minou Joubert receives an anonymous letter at her father’s bookshop. Sealed with a distinctive family crest, it contains just five words: "She Knows That You Live". But before Minou can decipher the mysterious message, a chance encounter with a young Huguenot convert, Piet Reydon, changes her destiny forever. For Piet has a dangerous mission of his own, and he will need Minou’s help if he is to get out of La Cité alive.

Toulouse: As the religious divide deepens in the Midi, and old friends become enemies, Minou and Piet both find themselves trapped in Toulouse, facing new dangers as sectarian tensions ignite across the city, the battle lines are drawn in blood and the conspiracy darkens further. Meanwhile, as a long-hidden document threatens to resurface, the mistress of Puivert is obsessed with uncovering its secret and strengthening her power....

Suspenseful.

An intriguing story, beautifully written and read with authority and feeling. A very pleasing voice to listen to.

Gripping to the end

As the authors other books were gripping to the end I wasn't disappointed in The Burning Chambers. The book will hold you to the end and then tease you with the next book - so looking forward to the next one.

A special time and a special place

Another wonderful book by Kate Moss. Her words and the narrator recreate the turbulent times of the Huguenot /Catholic turmoil through so many characters, the innocence of Minnu and her siblings, the commitment of Piet to his cause and to his Lady of the Mists while the duplicity and hypocrisy of those who hold office in the Church is revealed in so many ways. I loved the beginning and the epilogue and look foreword to the next book and another country and how they link up. The Languedoc area especially Carcasson and Toulouse were crucial to the Cathars before the time of the Huguenots, must be something special in the air. This book recreates these atmosphere so well one can almost smell the land.

Too many characters doing nothing in particular

The rate at which characters are introduced in this book was confusing for me. I found the story line fragmented because of the different locations and myriad of characters that lacked development. I found it difficult to attach a purpose to each character and follow whether they were good or bad from chapter to chapter.

I am almost at the end of the book now and even as I appear to approach its climax the storyline is wanting. I will probably return this.

The narrator has a very soothing voice and is typically the type of tone I enjoy listening to.

Another visit to Carcasonne

Can’t wait for the sequel. Not quite Labyrinth but a good read all the same. This is what Kate Mosse does best. Her passion for the area is evident and her knowledge also.

Classic Kate Mosse

An engaging story, no huge surprises in the plot, but as always Kate Mosse brings the atmosphere of the south of France to life. But it is the performance by the narrator that takes it to a higher level.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Took a while for me to actually get into the story, but when I did I was hooked.
