About this listen

Aaron

When I’m running on fumes while driving on what feels like the loneliest stretch of road in California, I worry I’m in trouble. Luckily, I happen upon Aqua Vista, a sleepy coastal town with the only pump for miles, and the grumpy owner who is more gorgeous than he has any right to be. When I’m told I’ll need more than fuel to disable the check engine light on my dash, I figure there are worse places to be stuck while my car gets needed repairs.

Jack

After driving the handsome city dweller to a local motel, the last thing I expect is the hot hookup that happens afterward. As soon as his car is ready, he’s on his way home, so imagine my surprise when he shows up a couple of months later with an offer to buy my business. No way I want an out-of-towner to own part of what my family has built here. Even if I’m not always fulfilled by it. Besides, it belonged to my parents, and it’s all I have left of them.

When Aaron decides to spend several days in town, I figure it’s to soften me up to his proposal. I shouldn’t hook up with him again. Or spend time showing him around…but I do. Before I know it, the charming, attractive visitor starts to feel familiar, almost like he belongs here. Like he’s woven himself into the very fabric of Aqua Vista. I’m fooling myself, of course, and it’ll certainly sting when he hits the road. Outsiders never stay, and though I secretly wish he would, I’m no stranger to heartache.

Loved the setting for this one both California and Aqua Vista. I'm looking forward to learning more about this town and the people in it. It made perfect sense that Aaron would fall in love with both the town and Jack and want to come back and become part of the community and I enjoyed both of these guys working out how that could happen. Nick J. Russo gives a wonderful, warm performance here and let us feel the magic of the setting and the connection between Aaron and Jack.

"Just Jack" is a heart-warming contemporary romance that captures the essence of small-town charm and the complexities of love. The story follows Aaron, a city dweller whose car breaks down in the sleepy coastal town of Aqua Vista. There, he meets Jack, the grumpy yet gorgeous owner of the only gas station for miles. What starts as a simple car repair turns into an unexpected romance filled with emotional depth and genuine connection.

Christina Lee's writing is both engaging and heartfelt, drawing readers into the lives of Aaron and Jack. The characters are well-developed, with Aaron's cheerful and outgoing personality contrasting beautifully with Jack's broody and introverted nature. The chemistry between the two protagonists is palpable, making their journey from strangers to lovers a delightful experience.

Nick J. Russo's narration elevates the story to another level. His performance is exceptional, bringing each character to life with distinct voices and emotions. Russo's ability to capture the nuances of the story and convey the characters' feelings adds an extra layer of depth to the audiobook.

I really enjoyed this heart-warming, low-angst MM love story. Jack and Aaron meet by chance when Aaron almost runs out of gas before finding the small town of Aqua Vista and the only gas station for miles. Jack is the owner of the station, which was left to him by his parents (sad story you find out about later). Both men are gay, and the attraction between them is instant. A hook-up results, but neither can forget the other, even after Aaron goes home. Aaron returns to Aqua Vista with an offer to purchase Jack's property, causing some animosity and misunderstanding. As Aaron learns more about Aqua Vista and it's residents, he falls in love with the town as much as does Jack, but Aaron's life is in the big city, and Jack has been hurt before.

This is a wonderful, fun, low-angst story. I loved the various (related) residents of Aqua Vista and how they all supported each other, especially is tough times. This is more than a love story, though. There are secondary themes of redemption and forgiveness, doing what you love, and believing in yourself. Aaron's business partner rubbed me the wrong way for most of the story, so I hope we learn more about him in a future book, and that maybe he'll turn out to be less of a jerk.

The narration by Nick Russo is fantastic. He really captures the personalities and emotions of all the characters.

I received a free copy of the audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

This story points out destiny is alive. Aaron has car problems and pulls into the only service station around to find out he luckily avoided a major problem. While interacting with this grumpy station owner Jack, he finds there is more to this guy than from first impression.

Jack is the owner of a family service station. He feels somewhat stuck in a daily life he is a little unsatisfied with. He then finds himself not able to forget his one night thing with Aaron.

This is a comfort read. Nick J. Russo again brings the story to life. I love books narrated by him.

I've not previously read anything by this author. I picked this up mostly because of the narrator, Nick J Russo, but also because it's small town romance.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It was a lovely gentle tale of moving beyond grief, rediscovering joy in life, and embracing change.

Small town life, with the mountains to one side and sea to the other, sounds idyllic. A place I'd love to live in. The main characters are engaging and have plenty of chemistry, although I didn't really read Jack as grumpy, no matter how many people, including his siblings, claimed that he was.
The side characters are well rounded and add layers to the MCs and the town.
I'm looking forward to Johnny's story. Sounds like a second chance romance to me.

A gentle listen without any major angst. Just the thing I needed at the moment.
