About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Annie's put fifteen years into safe, slightly obsessive Duncan, and now she's like her money back, please. It's time to move on. But she lives in Gooleness, the north's answer to a question nobody asked. Is she really going to find real, proper, fell-it-deep-down-in-your-boots love on a damp and windy seafront? Or perhaps she should follow her heart and pursue Tucker, the reclusive American rock star, who keeps emailing her his smart advice.

But between Annie and her second chance lie a few obstacles. There's Malcolm, the world's most judgemental therapist, and Barnesy, the north's most extrovert dancer. There's what men and women will do and won't do for love. And, of course, there's Tucker. . .

Hilarious and tender, this bestselling novel will move you in ways both profound and surprising. It's Nick Hornby at his brilliant best. If you like David Nicholls, David Sedaris and Jonathan Coe you will love this book.

This was one of my first listens on audible and I was very pleased with my choice. I had a great time listening to this bok in the gym, whilst commuting and even doing chores at home. Time flew.. The narration is absolutely fantastic. If you like Nick Hornby, you will love listening to this book.

An ideal audio book

Very much like Bridget Jones. slightly odd listening to 2 narrators acting the lines of the same characters. read the paperback in conjunction... preferred that to the audio.

the story is highly impossible to happen, but the performance was great. Easy to listen, good for a drive.

Easy read, not a great story

I read the other reviews before I bought this, where people mentioned the performance of the male American reader. I really wanted to dismiss them as just being picky, but his accents as genuinely so bad they are distracting and make the story hard to follow. The northern England accents come out as a continuous fluctuation between accents from South Africa, Austraila, New Zealand and nowhere in particular. Never from Northern England though. Or anywhere in England. There is no consistency in the application either. I couldn’t follow who was talking to who for a lot of the dialogue. The guy has a nice voice, he just can’t do accents, and perhaps it would have been better if he didn’t try?

Great story, distracting performance

Humorous dysfunction, well read, makes for a good listen. If you want something that?s for the most part light-hearted, quirkily observant and will now and again put a smile on your face; then this is for you.
