Stationen einer Jugend: Wenige Jahre vor Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges unehelich geboren, wird der Junge in ein "Militär-Knaben-Erziehungs-Institut" gesteckt, dessen preußischer Militärgeist ihm tief zuwider ist. Auch die anschließende Schule verstärkt seine Außenseiter-Rolle. Erst als er die Literatur entdeckt, hat er seine Welt gefunden.
Wolfgang Koeppen, der es nie liebte, "sich auf den Markt zu begeben und zu reden", liest mit altersweiser Stimme sein sprachliches Meisterwerk, wodurch sich eine suggestive Wirkung entfaltet, der man sich nicht entziehen kann.
