Johnny Lavatos knows the score. After clearing houses of spooks and spectres for five years, he’s willing to make a big bet on an old cabin in the woods that is said to be haunted by multiple ghosts. Now, with his bag of goodies, some clever tricks and an incantation spell he’s just itching to use, Johnny will have to guarantee the cabin gets cleared in just 14 hours. Any longer than that and he may just see his prospects for a better life go down the drain.

The text is in the form of a monologue from a man claiming native Indian heritage and working as an exocist of hauntings. His boast is he can clear anywhere with any number or variety of entities within 14 hours. We hear his backstory through the different encounters and each hour passing increases the tension as well as bringing fresh and more difficult challenges. These are gruesome rather than sanitised, so adult audience recommended. I liked the variety of entities and his resourceful way of countering them. I was particularly struck by the idea the location itself had agency and the justice of our hero being haunted by his own memory.

The narrator voiced the different encounters well without hamming up the creepiness. There was music and sound effects which added to the atmosphere.

Hauntingly imaginative novella.
