About this listen

If Hercules laboured, Achilles sang and Atlas shrugged, then Jesus Farted.

Simon Perry, a Biblical Scholar and Chaplain at the University of Cambridge, claims that if you cannot hear Jesus fart, you cannot hear his biblical voice.

By focusing on the vulgarity of the historical Jesus, Perry alerts the listener to a radical Jewish voice that history has sought to silence. The author's crude but beautifully written prose obliterates the popular notion of a saintly, pious, religious do-gooder. When the smoke has cleared, the Jesus left standing is revealed as a dangerous political, economic, and ideological threat to the imperial machinery of his day and ours.

A sometimes rude, sometimes crude but always wonderful reexamination of the Biblical Jesus, told with wit and compassion. Narrator Tim Atkin does a sterling job bringing Perry’s book to life. Burned through it in a few long car journeys and often laughed out loud. Encore!

A wise and very funny book, read magnificently

Despite what the title of type book might make you think the book is not written to get a cheap laugh
at the expense of a flatulent Saviour. The language used and references made clearly show that a lot of research and thought went to this book.
The subject matter often gets a quick laugh, who hasn’t laughed at a trouser trumpet, being the Dad of three children who all find farting hilarious.
It makes you think we are not all immune from rectal eruptions and that we are often offended by the wrong things in life.
One point I haven’t make. The author mentions an episode of flatulence during a quiet time in a Norfolk Chapel. Having on occasions shared a Norfolk chapel with the author, I wonder if it was one of my rectal rockets that caused this mention!!!

Not written for a cheap laugh!

I really enjoyed this. It was interesting, witty, intelligent and surprising. I laughed out loud in the first minute, and fairly frequently throughout. But I felt like I also learnt a lot, at the same time as chuckling childishly at words like ‘butt sludge’ 😅 It was somehow sophisticated and intellectually stimulating at the same time as the delightful toilet humour. The narrator’s voice is lovely to listen to, so expressive and he landed the humour brilliantly. I was surprised to see it wasn’t the author himself, it felt so in tune with the text. I’d seek out more audiobooks read by him. The narrator’s voice is so important I find.

Bizarre and brilliant

A personal, frank and sometimes rude view of Jesus as an earthly man. Simon Perry has researched his core premise from respected sources principally the bible.
It is read in a dry and witty style by Tim Atkin.

Thought provoking and quirky
