About this listen

Jessie Burton is lively and intelligent - she wants more than the respectable life in service her mother has planned for her. Times are changing, railways are being built across the land bringing new freedom and possibilities. Jessie tastes that freedom when she meets an ambitious young navvy, newly arrived in Yorkshire. The attraction between them is overwhelming. And Jared Wilde is determined to make Jessie his wife. The primitive, colourful shanty towns that spring up around the railway works are nothing like the safe world Jessie once knew. But in spite of the hardness of life there, she finds happiness with Jared. Until another navvy becomes determined to destroy their future together...

I really enjoyed listening to this book and look forward to listening to another story written by Anna Jacobs and read beautifully by Anne Dover. Maybe there will be a sequel to let us know how all the characters’ lives turned out to be in the the future. Lives in those days was different for the wealthy or poor people. It was very hard for some and even the more well to do people had their own problems. I loved it!

I highly recommend this book. i could not put it down till the very last word. The best book I have listened to.So well written by Anna Jacobs and brilliant narration by Anne Dover. A story of the life and love of a strong woman who faced many setbacks throughout life. A story of true love and romance too.
Looking forward to the next book by Anna Jacobs which will hopefully be narrated by Anne Dover too.

I was completely absorbed from the very beginning. I love the historical references Anna always includes in her books, really inspires me to learn more about the subject, in this case about the beginnings of the railways. Really didn't want the story to end, would love to read more about Jessie's life. Anne Dover is the very best narrator, I will always seek out books she has narrated.

Loved every minute.

Thoroughly enjoyed my first read from this Author. Did extra chores to be able to have a listen. Anne Dover as usual brought the book to life.
