About this listen

This highly enjoyable account of the life of Jane Austen is regarded as the classic biography of one of the greatest English novelists. It illustrates not only the character and opinions of an unusually perceptive and gifted woman, but also the social life amonst the county gentry of Georgian England. Outside her writing, Jane Austen's main interest was her large and affectionate family and their circle of friends. This is the world she so brilliantly depicted in her novels, and Elizabeth Jenkins shows how often the settings and characters mirrored the writer's own life in Hampshire.

Editor reviews

This is a highly enjoyable glimpse into the life of an ordinary woman of extraordinary talent. It's a pleasure to meet someone as down-to-earth as this lady and, by extension, her large and affectionate family and circle of friends. We also get a brief view of the countryside and people reflected in her writing. Aside from the musical interludes, which are a bit hectic and jarring, the production is fine. Teresa Gallagher handles the narration with a deft lightness that is exactly right for the material. She has wonderful, clear pronunciation and a sweet tone that make her a perfect match for this little gem.
