Das würde Mary Yellan, ihre Protagonistin, sicher nicht so sehen. Nach dem Tod ihrer Mutter zieht sie zu ihrer Tante Patience und deren Mann Joss, Wirt des fiktiven Jamaica Inn. Noch auf der Fahrt wird sie vor dem finsteren Ort gewarnt. Tatsächlich ist Onkel Joss ein unberechenbarer Tyrann, für dessen üble Machenschaften sich auch Friedensrichter Bassat interessiert. Im Gasthaus verkehrt eine Schmugglerbande - und Joss' zwielichtiger Bruder Jem, ein Pferdedieb, in den Mary sich nichtsdestotrotz verliebt. Eines Nachts muss sie den Überfall der Schmuggler auf ein Schiff miterleben. Sie ahnt jedoch nicht, wer wirklich hinter den Raubmorden an der wettergegerbten Küste steckt ...
