The contemporary church needs this book to show that the path of obedience to Jesus requires a readiness and expectation that the way up is down. We expect it regarding persecution in countries hostile to the gospel, but in peaceful nations we assume that life following Jesus will be similarly comfortable to unbelievers, if not more comfortable because we have the meaning and purpose that Jesus gives us. But we don't get to define our own humiliation and we need to see that every failure and downward path is part of necessary self denial and crucification of our ego. Only then will we pursue and experience the reality that God gives grace to the humble.

We need this book! And Paul Miller's (sometimes trite but also profound) illustrations of the J-Curve in his own life are very helpful to give us ideas of how the Lord is working in our own failures, sufferings and weaknesses to show us more of His grace.
