About this listen

This book is the inspiration of my third son, Arthur, nineteen years of age at the time it was written. Its title has been something of a family joke. At certain moments when caught up in the throes of a domestic squabble, we were near our wits' end I would pipe up with a note of sympathy: It's hard raising parents. Understandably, the phrase caught on with our four children. Over the years, this remark has provided a timely dose of relief.

This book, however, is not a joke. Rather, it is the bittersweet fruit of two and a half years, walking the razor's edge with Arthur—a tightrope walker, clown, mime, and courageous human being.

During this time, Arthur summoned up his courage to confront questions that many of us never have to face: Do I really want to go on with life? Is this a world in which I can truly feel at home, a world in which I can be myself? Arthur's questions I took to heart. Thus the sub-title of this offering: A Heart-to-Heart.

What a beautiful take on parenthood. I absolutely love how honest, and vulnerable the author is about their personal story of being a parent and the challenges that go along with being one. The lessons the author learns from his son Arthur are ones every parent should know. We tend to hear more about the mother's perspective in most books (which is not a bad thing), so it is quite refreshing to hear from the father's perspective as well. Like when he talks about struggling to say "I love you" to his son...oof so good! The only critique I have is the narrator stumbled on some words when reading but it's not terrible enough to take away from what he is saying. It is well-written and a great listen. Highly recommend it even if you're not a parent.

I just finished listening to "It's Hard Raising Parents." The book is about the Author, Artemis Greeley, and her son. It is very touching as she shares heartfelt stories and reflections. The information gave me a good insight into family dynamics. As I read this book, it made me reflect on my family and our dynamics. I was most moved by the honesty shared, especially in challenging times, like Arthur's big questions about purpose and belonging. I was touched by the emotional side of raising a child, as I have two children myself. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a heartfelt story.
