In seiner "Italienischen Reise" führt Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Tagebuch über seine Reise von Karlsbad über den Brenner, Gardasee, Verona und Venedig bis nach Rom und Sizilien, die er von 1786 bis 1788 unternommen hat. Hier entstehen mehr als 150 Zeichnungen. Bei dieser Reise wird ihm klar, dass ihm die Dichtkunst mehr liegt als die Malerei. Die "Weimarer Klassik" wird geboren!

Der Sprecher Gert Westphal liest dieses erst zwischen 1813 und 1817 entstandene Werk, das teilweise auf Briefen an Charlotte von Stein basiert, meisterhaft betont und einfühlsam.
