About this listen

In July 2018, Israel's Knesset approved the Nation-State Bill, a controversial piece of legislation, both at home and abroad, which declared Israel a sovereign state for the Jewish people. It followed US President Donald Trump's 2017 decision to relocate the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Both events provoked consternation and scorn from many countries, and offer the latest twists in the Israeli-Palestinian saga: two peoples on an everlasting - and seemingly irreconcilable - path to peace.

Israel and Palestine: The Complete History seeks to explain the overall story of Israeli and Palestinian tensions and divisions in the region. Indeed, without properly understanding the full history of the area, it is impossible to understand the current situation.

In this book, author Ian Carroll takes the listener back to the very beginning of the conflict some 4,000 years ago, then moves through the major events of the Middle Ages and 20th century, and brings us right up to the present day, documenting the significant events that have happened along the way. The listener is allowed to make up their own mind as to where praise and condemnation belong with this complicated issue.

From Exodus to the birth of Jesus, from Islam to the Crusades, through the Diaspora and up to the recreation of the modern state of Israel and beyond, Israel and Palestine: The Complete History avoids a dry academic approach. It aims to tell the history of the region and peoples in a balanced and brisk fashion, from a storyteller’s perspective.

With talk of a Third Intifada and the introduction of the Nation-State Bill all bringing this age-old issue to the forefront of world news once more, there has never been a more appropriate time to understand and appreciate Israel and Palestine’s history.

I chose this book because it went back to the very beginning of the Palestinian/ Israeli history. I wanted to read about this to gain an understanding of the drivers in the mentality of both parties. I found this interesting, though it was long. Fair enough. it had to be to cover such a huge time span in history.

Unlike other reviewers I did find this book unbiased. Just because it depicts more atrocious enacted by Israelis than Palestinians, doesn't make it unbiased. it makes it true. That's just the situation.

A comprehensive, unbiased, factual account of the situation

half the book is redundant. I did not need a history from biblical times. I suspected a bias in the story and needless to say it's difficult to support alot of Israel s actions but to talk about Arafat s 'martyrdom'
is a bit over the top when he died in hospital from old age. and as the saying goes the Palestinians have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. a book half the size would have been much better

slightly biased

The book gives a good overview of the main turning points of the story of Israel and Palestine. However it bothered me that the book presents some dubious biblical stories like the slaughter of innocents and the exodus from Egypt as historical, which makes it hard to trust the ancient history section of the book. The more recent history in the book seems fine and fairly neutral from my point of view. Although I later found out that some relevant details were left out, like some specifics of the Oslo Accords. As always with controversial topics, make sure to also check out other versions of the story to get a more complete picture.

Good primer on the topic

This is not the first book on the issues involved that I have read. It covers the history very thoroughly in my view leaving no gaps. I also felt it was unbiased. A good book if you know little of the whole history of Israel. It does disregard the biblical record as being more like a fable

The narration needed a bit more life

I struggled with this audiobook. The narrator has a very unusual time, robotic and with unauthentic (in my opinion) intonation. The author also seemed to me a little myopic (spending lots of time detailing the individual Palestinian citizens the IDF killed in one raid, but only mentioned as an aside that 60 suicide bombers attached Israel in a 6 month period. The author also describes himself as a writer and the choice of adjectives and descriptions were much more in the style of a thriller than a journalist. I found this weird.

Robotic narration, weirdly written
