At forty years old, a successful writer, husband and father, no longer toiling on offshore drilling rigs, was Paul Carter happily nestled in the cotton wool of suburban life enjoying the fruits of his labour? Was he f**k!

Yes, that's right, he'd want to be the first guy to ride around Australia on an underpowered experimental motorcycle that runs on used cooking oil, wouldn't he? Preferably without getting hit by a semi-trailer full of bridge parts. Is he out of his mind? Quite possibly. Carter is back to his old balls-to-the-wall style of writing, prepare to laugh out loud.

What made the experience of listening to Is That Thing Diesel? the most enjoyable?

The story line was excellent and very entertaining. As a motorbike enthusiast and rider I enjoyed the 'experience'.

There were lots of memorable moments. some were laugh-out-loud, some were less so.

I am not a prude by any stretch of the imagination but I would have liked a warning about the strong language. Being a woman of mature years (60+) and a bike rider myself I enjoyed all of the ride and the adventure that Paul took us on.

A good listen overall, but about halfway through, we hadn't started the ride yet. I can't help but feel a bit more could have been made of the journey... then again, it might be a bit lonesome and quiet out on much of the Aussie lap... and still not sure what caused the spill.
Well read tho... and a good story on the whole which genuinely made me augh out loud at a couple of inappropriate times.

The depth of feeling that came over in the telling was wonderful, especially the love for his wife and daughter. I could picture / imagine a lot of the places he mentioned in the story, as I have been to a small section of Australia and enjoy YouTube videos that take me further around. I’m not a lover of hearing the C bomb, but understand that people do talk like that. Perhaps that might have been warned about at the start. If it was I’m sorry I missed it, but personally, it wouldn’t have stopped me from reading or listening to his tale.

Very different to the ‘normal’ travel books I read. But loved it. Paul narrates the book brilliant and you immerse yourself in the journey with him. Hospital toilet chapter I near spat coffee over my car dashboard. Very funny..
