About this listen

“I’ve made no secret of what I want… You. It’s always been you.”

Wren Embervale, alchemist-turned-assassin, finds solace in only one thing: seeking vengeance for the death of her friends. The wars of the past may be over, but her thirst for revenge is far from quenched.

For years, she has been content with her poisons and potions for company, but when an unknown form of alchemy is used to attack a king of the midrealms, Wren’s time in the shadows comes to an end.

She’s offered a place at the ancient alchemy academy of Drevenor to find a cure to the dark magic threatening the kingdoms. To win her spot, she must conquer the Gauntlet, a grueling series of deadly trials that could cost her sanity, or her life.

More is at play than sabotage from fellow competitors. Magic wielders are being targeted and Wren becomes tangled in a dangerous web of deception and bloodshed that puts the entire realm at risk.

But the biggest threat of all might come from the man assigned to protect her—Torj Elderbrock, the silver-haired war hero who has hated her since she assassinated his last charge.

Their shared history ignites a simmering tension that threatens to consume them both.

Peace is fragile, trust is scarce and enemies lurk around every corner… Will love heal all wounds—or will it be the most lethal poison of all?

Iron & Embers is the breathtaking first installment in the epic fantasy romance series, The Ashes of Thezmarr. With its lush world-building, sizzling chemistry, and heart-pounding action it’s perfect for fans of Fourth Wing, From Blood & Ash, and The Bridge Kingdom.

Great start to the new books and I’m glad I waited until I had finished the first 3. Wren and Torj might be my new faves but I liked that familiar characters were included- it’s just seamlessly flowed into the next part of the series.
The usual banter and playfulness that broke up the drama along with a nice bit of spice.
Narrators did a great job - dual rather than duet but both covered each other’s characters so well I really enjoyed it.

Loved this so much

*audiobook review ♾️ ⭐

Firstly Matt Haynes and Emilia Bauer do a phenomenal job of narrating this masterpiece. They both brought the characters to life and made me feel like I was a part of the story!

I love Helen Scheuerer books, especially the Legends of Thezmarr which is one of my top 5 romantasy series of all time!

This series is continuing the story with Wren and Torj. If you haven't, I really suggest reading the legends of thezmarr series first as it helps build foundations before this series.

A dark emotionally charged fantasy tale that contains vengeance, alchemy and a slow burn steamy romance in a world on the edge of a shadow war. Wren is a gifted poisoner driven by revenge after enduring loss and grief. Haunted by the nightmares of the war Wren comes across with fury, which is only sharpened by her training. There is so much secrecy and danger on the path of retribution.

Bear slayer Torj likes Torj and you get a real sense of the affection. Their chemistry is steamy and emotionally complex. Torj becomes Wren’s bodyguard and protector and it’s amazing listening to their bond deepen.

Alchemists, warlords and apprenticeships and so much more. As much as I hate to admit it the only downfall for me was how much I loved ‘fourth wing’ and I felt like parts of this was that for me just without dragons, specifically with the gauntlet. However I did enjoy the chase for mastery.

It’s thrilling, tragic, immersive, and so much more. I’m really glad I stuck with it.

Persevered and wasn’t disappointed
