Summary

Nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the US to find work. Recently it has dawned on her that he isn't the only man who has left town. In fact there are almost no men in the village - they've all gone north. While watching The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men - her own "Siete Magníficos" - to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over.

Filled with unforgettable characters and prose as radiant as the Sinaloan sun, Into the Beautiful North is the story of an irresistible young woman's quest to find herself on both sides of the fence.

Needs a better reader

This novel is amazing for the time period it was written in. The audible reading, however, needs someone who is fluent in Spanish. I ended up buying the kindle version so that I could follow along.

Errors

There were quire a few errors, especially in the Epilogue, between the book and the audio. Instead of the word "hibiscus" from the book, "Jamaica" was substituted and this is just a minor example. Also, the reader definitely does not know Spanish or not well enough. The book itself is great, but this audio should be redone.

I wasn't feeling the reader.

Are we short on Bilingual readers?
I love LAU's work but the reader almost made it hurt to listen to. But thank you all for what you do.

Good story but narrator mispronounces Spanish words.

Loved the story, but I wish they would have gotten a narrator who speaks Spanish or at least pronounced the Spanish words correctly.

Terrrible Spanish pronunciation!

So bad it was distracting. I found the story intriguing but felt having a non-Spanish speaker read it was an insult to writer and readers alike.

Awful narrator, but beautiful story.

I loved the book. Very well written and provides us with characters that are proud of their home. Pleasantly different.
The narrator delivered poorly because of awful pronunciations. I had to open the book at times to understand what she was trying to say.

Disappointed in the Performance

Great story but as a Latina I am disappointed that you could not find someone to read this story that understands the nuance of the language and slang and how to pronounce words correctly in Spanish!!! I loved the story but cringed every time a word in Spanish was destroyed it made for a less than pleasant experience. You can’t fake a Mexican accent!!! Be more culturally aware and find readers that will do justice to Urrea’s great story!
