About this listen

Mason gives people too many chances, Hunter gives too few, but are they willing to take a chance on each other?

Mason’s always tried to believe the best in people, and for the most part, their sunshine attitude pays off. They love their friends, their family, and they’re determined to win over their broody, gorgeous coworker Hunter—especially when their car in the shop turns into carpooling to work together.

Hunter’s only seen the worst in people, and he doesn’t trust easily—not after growing up with a mom who ditched and an addict dad. However, perky, sweet, hot-as-hell Mason seems to win him over with every goofy comment or adorable smile, and before he can stop himself, he’s falling hard.

The more time Mase and Hunter spend together, the more their attraction flares until they’re both holding the hope for something real. However, when Hunter’s past collides with his present, the secret he's been keeping threatens to destroy everything—the home he established, the friends who’ve become his new family, and any chance of a future with Mason.

This is book 3 in this series but it can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed this one alot more than the previous book.

This was a sweet friend's to lovers story but it was also very tragic, heartwrenching and deep. I really enjoyed all the characters and the 2 MCs had great chemistry together. This was a fairly quick read at just over 4 hours and I couldn't put it down from start to finish. I really enjoyed the plot even though it was pretty solemn from start to finish. It was a slow burn with low heat and no relationship angst. I enjoyed how it ended and although it was a quick read it felt complete.

I enjoyed the world the author built of this dugeons and dragons geeky game bar. The group of friends are all great.

The narrator did a fantastic job. His voice was pleasant to listen to and he kept a good pace. He expressed all the emotions wonderfully and brought the story to life. He gave all of the characters, including side characters their own distinct voice that suited each of them perfectly so it was easy to follow the story and made it a pleasure to listen to.

A whole lot of sweet hurt/comfort

4.5 stars. A narrator I hadn't heard before but really enjoyed. The story flowed well and the character interpretation was great. The they/them pronouns sounded completely natural. While I am non-binary, I live in a country where English is not the standard language so I hadn't actually heard these pronouns used out loud. The non-binary representation is excellent. Both MCs were suffering from family using drugs, although their experiences were really different. The other characters were interesting and the Tavern found family as delightful as before.

Excellent

Wonderful book. Very touching. Both Hunter and Mason's backstories were heartbreaking and I ached for them but the book was hopeful and it gave me joy to see those two happy and together and thriving. They deserve it more than anyone. I really liked them as individuals and I adored them together. They warmed my heart.
The found family theme in the book was brilliant. I just love this group of friends.
I loved the narrator. Very expressive and I liked how he voiced each character. Especially Mason.
Great story and great audiobook.

Hunter doesn’t trust anyone. He’s been let down by the people who should’ve taken care of him. He was forced to grow up way too fast and had to do some unsavory things to survive. He’s ashamed of his past – even if he had no choice. He’s gotten out of that mess – for the most part – and has created a new life for himself. He works at Tabletop Tavern – a café where people come to play board games and stay for the camaraderie.

Mase’s life could’ve been defined by an unbearable tragedy. And maybe in some ways it has – they’ve taken what happened to their beloved sister and decided to become a substance abuse counsellor. To make ends meet while in school, they work at Tabletop Tavern. Oh, and they have a massive crush on Hunter who never seems to pay them any mind.

Until their truck breaks down and they need rides. Rides Hunter is only too happy to provide. Slowly, they start spending more time together. Get to know each other. All the while, though, their pasts are creeping up on them. Their time together at Comic Con LA gives them a reprieve and they bond. Hunter shares his hidden talent. Great, right?

Nope. Then they come home and the dung hits the fan. Things get real. And Hunter’s past is more than Mase can bear. So they split.

Now, this is a Katherine McIntyre romance…so I knew I’d get my happy ending. Man, though, did she ever put Mase and Hunter through the wringer. I have to say, the angst was pretty real in this book. In the end, though, so was the love. Brennan Rossi is a great narrator and he did a fabulous job on this book. I look forward to more books narrated by him and I’m definitely looking forward to more Tabletop Tavern books by Katherine.

Mason and Hunter are a wonderful couple. They fancy each other but neither of them realizes it. When the finally get together insecurities nearly tear them apart. I loved how supportive Mason was of Hunter's art and how he encouraged him to come out of his shell.

This is another great book in this series and stands alone. I didn't read them in order and never felt lost. I should mention that this is the first audiobook I've listened to narrated by Brennan Rossi and I think he did a very good job.

I loved Mason and Hunter!
