About this listen

Post-alien invasion Belfast. Earth has been defeated. Pity the locals aren't listening. Teenager John Dray will do whatever he must to survive. When he's offered desperately needed food in exchange for dispersing a mysterious compound over the city, he takes the job. The compound turns out to be lethal to the alien invaders and John is charged with xenocide. He's sent to Inish Carraig, a forbidding prison, where he discovers a conspiracy that threatens Earth and everyone he loves. He has to unveil the plot. He just has to get out of prison first.

Would you consider the audio edition of Inish Carraig to be better than the print version?

No. I devoured the print version in record time and loved it. I found this slower going, but that may be because I find audiobooks difficult to listen to.

I love reading, and can visualise the scenes as I read. With audiobooks, I tend to get distracted more by what's going on around me, and find it difficult to concentrate on the story as much. That's probably why it took me so long to finish the audio version of this book.

What did you like best about this story?

It's fast-paced, gritty, and has a strong sense of place, with believable characters you can identify with.

Which character – as performed by Gary Furlong – was your favourite?

Josie, although some of the characters did sound a bit alike at times. I would have liked a touch more variation in the voices. However, this could be my personal taste, being more used to hearing books being read out to an audience, with a bit of performance, than an audiobook format.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have liked to but, as above, I prefer reading the print version. I'd thoroughly recommend it, though, for anyone who really likes audiobooks, but warn them that the story is addictive, and difficult to leave until you find out how it's resolved.

Any additional comments?

I found Gary Furlong's narration a bit fast to begin with. He has a good voice for the task, with very clear diction, but the prose was delivered in a bit of a staccato manner for me. As the story progressed though, this seemed to calm down. That may have been him easing into the story, or me becoming used to his style. So, if you do find this, I'd say stick with it. It really is worth it.

Brilliant story

This is one amazing story, it seriously never let up once... which is proven by the time being 4:45am and my eyes looking like I've been infected with some weird Zombie virus. Soooo night people and don't forget, you really have to read/listen to this book. Yawn

Just... wow

Great wee novel to come out of Northern Ireland. Character driven, but not at all lacking in plot. Full of suspense as the story builds. Took me a little while to get used to the narrator, but he got really into it and was great at bringing something different to each voice. You never got confused about who was saying which bit.
