About this listen

A small town murder hides a dark secret....

When online influencer Simone Baker asks Leland Munroe to defend her on a criminal charge, the small town lawyer is ready to say no. He’s not a criminal lawyer—despite what the people of Basking Rock seem to think. Social media and manslaughter are both far from his area of expertise. But with no other clients coming through his door, Leland takes the job to make ends meet.

At first, he figures the prosecution’s weak evidence should make for a simple defense. But Simone’s case isn’t as straightforward as it seems, and her testimony weaves a tale of missing young women, racism, and evidence tampering by local police.

Leland’s investigation soon reveals a criminal conspiracy lurking in the shadows of the small town. An innocent women may be tied up with a criminal organization he thought was gone from Basking Rock for good. And as the Jury’s verdict looms closer, it’s not just Simone’s freedom that hangs in the balance.

Leland’s own life is on the line as well....

Well this was an interesting story about how money influences the internet, the court case was interesting and I liked how the interwove covid restrictions into the plot.

In the first book I struggled with the narration until about half way through, this time it felt completely natural; although there was nearly a year between me listening to the two.

Really interesting story

I really enjoyed listening to this book, the first from Mr. Kirkland and I believe also that it was the first for the narrator J J Hosenfeld. He did a good job of bringing the story to life for me. This book gave me a look into how people make money using the internet to influence people. Simone has done very well at it as she relates to the audience how she deals with her illness and healthy lifestyle. I was surprised by who was actually guilty in this book and I'm hoping if there is another book it will allow us to have a further look into what happened. I'm sorry I can't remember the lawyers name but his helper Terri was great at being able to find information. I would enjoy listening to more of this author's books. Our hero is at a low point in this second book in the series having moved from big city proescutorial role he is second-string defence lawyer in a small town firm taking poorly paying cases, if there are any. His wife has recently died and his teenaged son injured, crushing hopes of a basketball career. He cannot afford a headstone for his wife and the treatment for his son. Then, the Covid 19 pandemic hits.
His new client seems to have a hopeless case to defend as her competitor is found dead in her house's guestroom and the prosecution think they have a strong case against the influencer host, Simone. It is interesting the way Leland Munroe wriggles through the obstacles of keeping her out of jail without a plea bargain or ruling out evidence that must have been planted. The ex-cop PI he employs is pivotal in helping unravel the spiralling suspects and motives in committing this murder by opiate overdose. I found the internal debating about strategy and which evidence to include or omit an interesting insight into the character. There is peril and hardship along the way, but fun to see how he works when well resourced. I have deducted a star as I feel there were too many co-incidences in the resolution.

The narration is good, but I also felt the coyness and pitch of the female PI made her sound immature at times and that is contrary to how the character is written.
