Oppressée dans son mariage, Indiana cherche une aventure : celle-ci achèvera de l'opprimer. "J'ai écrit Indiana avec le sentiment non raisonné, mais profond et légitime, de l'injustice et de la barbarie des lois qui régissent encore l'existence de la femme dans le mariage, dans la famille et dans la société." Paru en 1832, Indiana fut lu comme un pamphlet contre le mariage, et lança la carrière littéraire de l'auteure. Sand y expose les libérations illusoires qui enferrent les femmes dans une vie dont elles n'ont pas la clef. Son récit inverse le trajet habituel du roman : pour pouvoir être aimée, l'héroïne devra d'abord se libérer.

I absolutely loved Indiana by George Sand! What really stood out to me was Sand’s remarkable ability to bring her characters to life with such depth and complexity.
