About this listen

An immersive and ambitious new series from the Aurealis Award-winning author of A Crucible of Souls.

A corrupted power stirs from beyond the grave.
A sacred order of knights sworn to protect the world from evil.
The Necromancer Queen will rise again.

Seventeen years have passed since the Necromancer Queen Talia was overthrown and slain, and her capital city destroyed by the Knights of the Order of Eternal Vigilance.

Anskar DeVantte, raised in the sacred disciplines of the Order, is now ready to face the brutal initiation trials to become a consecrated knight-sorcerer.

But the further Anskar rises in the ranks the more his faith wavers, and he is beset by harrowing dreams and uncertainty. As troubling powers awaken within him, a schism grows between Anskar and his hallowed Order, and he draws the hungry gaze of the vanquished queen’s fanatical followers.

As Anskar pieces together the mysteries of his early life, and begins to understand the malevolent forces gathering in his path, he finds himself with a crucial choice to make: Remain loyal to the Order’s righteous mission, or control the dark powers growing within him.

Either way, his destiny is steeped in war. The only question is, which side will he be on?

First of all the book doesn't really do anything new, but then again there are no new ideas left in storytelling, literally everything you can think of has already been done before so there's nothing wrong with that.

The story and characters are well written, protagonist is someone who really wants to be a perfect Galahad style perfect Knight but is simply far too flawed to be that way.

The most interesting part of the whole thing is the magic system so might as well talk about it.

The magic system is interesting, basically there are Tides of magic, which have some overlap even though they are wildly different in nature.

Namely the ones we know of right now are the Dawn Tide, the Dusk Tide and the Dark Tide. Dawn tide is focused on stuff like healing but also has offensive capabilities like the other two, Dusk Tide is considered sorcery and focuses on offensive spells and Dark Tide is more mysterious than that.

However interestingly enough all 3 of them can produce Wards, which are basically magical shields that seem identical in form and function but are simply different colours, at least that's how it appears, which makes it seem like maybe the difference between these 3 isn't as vast as it might seem.

I think that's enough to make you curious about how it all works without spoilers so I'll leave it at that.

Overall this is a good book, considerably better than average so the story earns 3 stars there. Nothing groundbreaking but well written, well narrated because yeah no shit it's Michael Kramer and the story is interesting enough for me to have already purchased the second book in the series.

Excellent, classic fantasy story

The story was very similar to several others I have read lately: growing up in a school system but not quite accepted, the object of hate that becomes the object of love and turning out to be the very thing that was perceived to be the enemy.

Well written and enjoyable but …

Having listened to all the other books by Mitchell Hogan available on audiobook, I was so looking forward to this new series. I was not disappointed! The story, narration, characters were brilliant, I highly recommended this book.
Can’t wait for the next instalment now.

Superb

I so wanted to enjoy this story but why does the narrator read the sentences as though they are questions? It is really distracting with many non question sentences ending with a raised inflection!

Frustrating narrator

Easy listening, engrossing, good action.. Does everything you're looking for in a swords and sorcery book.

Ticks all the boxes
