About this listen

'Wonderfully entertaining . . . Maeve is on cracking form' - Jilly Cooper

In A Country Garden is a heartwarming, hilarious tale of growing old not-so-gracefully, from the bestselling author of The Time of Their Lives, Maeve Haran.

Lifelong friends Claudia, Ella, Laura and Sal celebrated sixty as the new forty, determined not to let age change things. But now they are looking at the future and wondering how to make growing old more fun.

Why not live together and have sunny afternoons on the lawn, helping and supporting each other when any of them need it - and still keep enjoying life? Joined by Claudia’s reluctant husband and Sal’s energetic new fiancé, they ignore the protests of their children and pool their resources in a lovely manor house in the country. Only Laura holds out, determined she still has some living to do, especially now she has met the dashing Gavin through an online dating app.

But life still has plenty of surprises in store plus a little romance in what the locals dub a New Age Old Age Commune. But are your best friends the last people you should end up living with?

Critic reviews

Wonderfully entertaining . . . Maeve is on cracking form. (Jilly Cooper)
Funny, touching and of the baby boomer movement.
In typically entertaining fashion, Haran follows the ups and downs of the four as the move to a country mansion takes shape against the odds. A fun, uplifting read
Maeve Haran’s unflinching description of what happens when the hedonistic baby boomers finally grow up and are faced with the next stage of their lives will make you laugh, cry, and rejoice in equal measures. A true novel of our times! (Nadia Marks, bestselling author of Among the Lemon Trees)
Comic, poignant and thought-provoking (Marian Keyes)
Warm, clever and extremely funny. Among its many virtues are lovable characters
Wise, witty and spirited, this novel shows you’re never too old to follow your dreams
She’s talking about my generation, the baby boomers who assumed we were far too cool to get old

Bit far fetched but it’s fiction so that’s what it is.
Wouldn’t particularly recommend it. But easy holiday read.

I absolutely loved every aspect of this audiobook, from the pace to the narrator. I read the previous books and was very pleased to hear yet another story about the 4 friends. It's like a warm bath on a cold night - soothing and reassuring. Highly recommended
