Summary

Sally Field is one of the most celebrated, beloved and enduring actors of our time, and now she tells her story for the first time in this intimate and haunting literary memoir. In her own words, she writes about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

Sally Field has an infectious charm that has captivated audiences for more than five decades, beginning with her first television role at the age of 17. From Gidget’s sweet-faced ‘girl next door' to the dazzling complexity of Sybil to the Academy Award-winning ferocity and depth of her role in Norma Rae and Mary Todd Lincoln, Field has stunned audiences time and time again with her artistic range and emotional acuity. Yet there is one character who always remained hidden: the shy and anxious little girl within.

With raw honesty and the fresh, pitch-perfect prose of a natural-born writer, and with all the humility and authenticity her fans have come to expect, Field brings readers behind the scenes for not only the highs and lows of her star-studded early career in Hollywood but deep into the truth of her lifelong relationships including, most importantly, her complicated love for her own mother.

Powerful and unforgettable, In Pieces is an inspiring and important account of life as a woman in the second half of the 20th century.

Brilliant

I have followed Sally Field's career being a similar age and have always wondered what sort of person she would really be. This book answers all my wondering. She does not hold back from appearing unlikable and you feel she is completely honest about all aspects of her life and career. The parts she has played have been woven in to her story in a really interesting way which keeps the pace without becoming a boring list of actor accomplishments as so many autobiographies of actors become. Sally reads so beautifully without some of the strange 'stops and starts' which are very noticeable with some narrators, giving an uneven performance. Highly recommended and one of the best books I have listened to this year.

Honest and brilliantly written

Sally Field gives an honest and raw account of her career but also her feelings and experiences. She doesn’t just touch the surface but delves deep into her life and offers the reader a true insight into how it felt and feels to be her! I would highly recommend this book!!!

Tough listening in places

I was looking forward to listening but found it very hard in places, especially the sexual abuse. However, it also flowed very slowly for much of the book covering the early years in almost microscopic detail but then covering 20 years in one sentence. Some relationships were very detailed as with Burt Reynolds, and then some like her husband Alan and 10 year marriage given fleeting mention. I’m afraid to say this was not what I expected, although enlightening ultimately a little disappointing.

Very honest and heart felt biography

I really enjoyed this book, its very honest, not flashy show biz stuff but very much about Sally and especially the relationship with her mother.

A heartfelt Memoir.

This was an extremely personal and at times uncomfortable read. You can almost feel Sally field just taking a deep breath and telling it like it is. My one criticism would be - although im not sure one should criticise someone so openly pouring out memories which must feel as real today as they had the day they happened - I wanted to know more about her career. The first half of her unhappy TV years were well documented. The later half seemed to be somewhat rushed towards the end. Perhaps that was the book she wanted to write. I have always loved, resepted Sally Field the actress, .but after reading this I now admire Sally Field the woman.

In pieces by Sally Field

Powerful! We are always more than we think we are. Sally, like most of us, needed many years of gaining wisdom to realise that. Thank you Sally for revealing your soul.
