WINNER OF THE WATERSTONES NOVEL OF THE YEAR PRIZE 2023
THE TOP FIVE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
In 1914, war feels far away to Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood. They're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that his best friend is in love with him too.
When Gaunt's mother asks him to enlist, he signs up immediately, relieved to escape his overwhelming feelings. But Ellwood and their classmates soon follow him to the front. Ellwood and Gaunt find love in the trenches – but just as war brought them together, it can tear them apart…
An epic, unforgettable love story between two soldiers in the First World War, In Memoriam is a breath-taking debut.

Breathtaking
I was thoroughly swept away and moved beyond words by this book. It is wonderful in every way I can think of: beautifully written, a genius structure which takes you through every level of emotion and the characters will stay with me forever . Christian Coulson’s reading is perfect.

Poignant, yet exquisitely beautiful
I chose to listen to this based on the reviews, and because I am studying aspects of WW1 at University. I had been struggling to comprehend the horrors of trench life and hoped that this novel would help. It did.
Beautifully handled by the narrator, this story brought everything to life for me; to the extent that it could pull me back through time to imagine more clearly the terrors, futility, anger and sadness that the people who experienced this horrific period of history had to endure. The love between Gaunt and Elwood was woven delicately within a tale that highlighted the overwhelming enduring importance of friendships and how humanity could not be destroyed by war.
Thoroughly recommended.

Enthralling - totally absorbing
It took me a little while to into this book, but once I knew the characters better I was totally caught up in their individual, and group, experiences during the war.

Brilliantly written
It’s a true but morbid description of the suffering of the 1st world war. The story of the additional pain of the characters was horrifying and beautiful A long but good read. I was glad to finish it but twice as glad that I read it.

Endearing beautiful love story
Was a little slow to start but when it got going I couldn’t put it down. Bird song with homosexuality and illicit love at the forefront . A story of deep love and the hypocrisy of the time. Beautifully crafted.
