About this listen

#1 New York Times bestselling author Chloe Gong's adult epic fantasy debut, inspired by Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, is a fiery collision of power plays, spilled blood, and romance amidst a set of deadly games.

The only way to win, is to survive.

Every year, thousands flock to San-Er, the dangerously dense capital twin cities of the kingdom of Talin, where the palace hosts a set of deadly games. Those confident in their ability to jump between bodies can enter a fight to the death - for the chance to win unimaginable riches.

Princess Calla Tuoleimi has been in hiding for five years, ever since she murdered her parents to free the people of Talin from her tyrannical family. Only one person stands in her way of finishing the job: her reclusive uncle King Kasa. However, she knows he always greets the victor of the games. If she wins, she will finally get the chance to kill him.

Enter Anton Makusa, whose childhood love has lain in a coma since they were both ousted from the palace. He's deep in debt trying to keep her alive. Which means his last chance at saving her is entering the games and winning.

When Anton proposes an unexpected alliance with Calla, they quickly find their partnership spiraling into something all-consuming. But before the games close, Calla must decide what she's playing for - her lover or her kingdom. For no matter what, only one of them can walk out alive . . .

Critic reviews

Smart, imaginative, and brutal, Immortal Longings is a mind- and genre-bending epic that is as cutting and honest as it is unpredictable. Chloe Gong's assertive style is filled with razor's-edge prose, and her complex characters will hurt you, but in the most thrilling way. What a time to be alive for book lovers
Immortal Longings is a grab-you-and-won't-let-go sort of book, as brutal and merciless as its characters. Everyone has secret plans, and everyone's life exists on the edge of betrayal. Each page is fierce and filled with yearning - I loved it
Gripping, bewildering, irresistible, Chloe Gong's Immortal Longings is a tour de force of Asian Futurism, a provocative examination of self and destiny that melds the ruthless sensuality of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with the visceral urgency of The Hunger Games. This book left me breathless!
I'm a simple girl: I see Chloe Gong, I read. She never disappoints, breathing fresh life into familiar tales that somehow still surprise, and in her adult debut Gong has taken her pitch-perfect characterisation, vivid worldbuilding, and ability to gut-wrench readers with a single line to new heights. Prepare for a read that will leave your heart as bloody as the contestants of the deadly San-Er games
Immortal Longings sounds like the perfect mix of suspense and romance
In true Shakespearean fashion Gong ends her final act with high-drama, bloodshed and much to leave you gasping over. Immortal Longings is an edge-of-your-seat kind of read, the kind that is enticing and more than a little bit wicked
Full of betrayal, complex characters and dubious morality
Chloe Gong masterfully intertwines intricate world-building, morally layered characters, and a riveting narrative in her debut adult novel
A slice of fantasy action-adventure that offers plenty of bloodletting and lusty craving
The violent cities of San-Er and their complex politics come to life in this immersive, action-packed novel inhabited by characters impossible to let go of until the last page

I had nothing against this book, there was nothing wrong with it but at the same time it was nothing special. I could guess most of the major plot twists well before they happen and I found myself impatient for the inevitable ending. a good book if you are new to fantasy but veterans may find themselves looking elsewhere.

a bit bland

The characters were fun and the concept was also greatly built on. The setting was interesting and voice actor was great. There were a few plot holes and side stories that went nowhere, which made a few things not make sense, but considering it’s not a standalone perhaps those things will be explored in the next book. The two love interests’ chemistry and interaction was not built upon enough to go from “tolerable in each others presence” to “I’d die for you” in so short time. Overall a fun read though.

Great concept and fun story

Would recommend. The beginning is interesting, the world building is unique and the ending was perfect.

Quite interesting. Surprised me in a few places.
