About this listen

It started as a joke.

A late-night video said, “If you want to be abducted by aliens, leave a comment."

I did.

Now I’m naked, caged, and staring into the glossy black eyes of something that doesn’t believe in safe words or human rights. Apparently, I’m being sold. Not as a citizen. Not as a person. As a pet.

And the worst part? I think someone out there just placed a bid on me.

Note: This is a short story packed with dark humor, alien danger, and uncomfortable desire. Listen at your own risk.

Loved the dual narration of Vivienne Ferrari and James Ford

When Maeve leaves a joking comment on an alien abduction video, she did not think they would take it for real. Maeve has wanted to escape her life and learns be careful what you wish for. This is a book of dark humour.

This was short but enjoyable. It explores power dynamics, and sexuality, as told from two different first-party perspectives. We hear about our heroine suddenly finding out about how alien abductions aren't at all how we've been led to believe. And about the different uses aliens have for humans.

I would not normally choose this genre, but I liked another short story by the same author so be aware of that background to my opinion. The story is told from the point of view of the naive young woman living vicariously through social media and the alien who becomes her owner. There are several explicit and detailed scenes of sexual activity, not all consensual. I liked the woman finding some agency in her circumstances and the depiction from two points of view. I did not find it erotic. There is an enormous plot hole which makes the story unravel and become incredulous.

The two narrators delivered their parts with appropriate emotion.

It hooked me from the beginning. The story fascinated me with its intriguing topic, and the writing flowed well, with no bumps in the road. I would recommend it to anyone who likes short stories that spark instant curiosity and make you wonder, " Where can any author find such challenging ideas?".

As much as the book was good, I just couldn’t really get into the story as much. Mainly because it felt weird and I like weird, but that could also be because I’ve not listened to an alien book like this before
