Summary

Sergei Andronikov was a child when the Mafia wiped out his family, leaving him with nothing but a hunger for revenge. Years later, through ruthless strategy and tireless patience, he's a contract killer working for the three families ruling Cape Swan...and he's nearly in position to bring them all down from the inside.

Domenico "Dom" Maisano is Mafia royalty, a made man...and a hitman. He's caught up in a violent life he can't escape, struggling to maintain an image he doesn't want, and suppressing desires he can't have.

A chance encounter throws the killers into each other's paths. Though Dom knows he's playing a dangerous game, he's intrigued and keeps coming back. Sergei can't resist him either - Dom is everything he set out to destroy, but he's also everything he's ever ached for in a man.

Then Sergei gets the contract he's been waiting for - the hit that promises to bring the town's Mafia to its knees.

But when a boss makes an unexpected move, Sergei must choose between dropping the hammer on the families he vowed to annihilate, and protecting the man he swore he wouldn't love.

And the wrong choice - or even the right one - will destroy them both.

Wow! The best Mafia m/m story I have ever read!

This is the first time I have taken the time to write a review after listening to about 200+ audiobooks but I felt this book deserved recognition.
Sergei and Dom, both forced into a world and life they never wanted, brought together by the violence of that world.
Damaged by what the mafia has done to their family and lives they come together and despite their relationship being primarily just for sex at first it develops into a wonderful emotional connection.
Emotional is also how I became on a couple of occasions in this book, unashamedly crying during the scene with Dom and his cousin on the beach.
I also have to give 5* to the narrator who I have to say made this audiobook the success it is. He was perfect! He switches between Georgian and various American character accents effortlessly and seamlessly.

One of my all-time favourites!

I don't even know where to begin to be honest. I'm not really a fan of mafia stories and yet this is definitely one of the top books I've ever read. It's so engaging with real, perfectly flawed, human and interesting real characters. I loved how different they were, their backgrounds, their cultures and yet they fell in love. The way it happened was realistically paced and at times their lives were tumultuous but I couldn't stop listening and would recommend to any male romance fans looking for a gritty plot and engaging read. And as for the narrator...well, one of the best. The characters all had their own tone and the accents were so on point. He brought such emotion to the main protagonists without being over the top and unlike a lot of m/m readers his tone changed to fit the mood, it wasn't the same tone for sex as it was for an action scene for example. He gave a flawless performance and I'm definitely going to look for more of his work. I had the worst week at work and listening to this story on my hellish commute saved me. I will listen to this book again and again.

A better than average romantic thriller

I enjoyed the reading even more than the story. The story is too flawed to be acceptable to anyone you likes to analyse a plot, but it is entertaining.
What I didn't understand; all the characters are American. They may be Italian- American or Russian- American etc. but the reader has gifted them all with heavy foreign accents.

Superb narration

Great story elevated by a captivating narration. I was hooked on this, it really drew me in. The narration is one of THE best I’ve listened to. Michael did a sterling job voicing all of the characters so distinctly and with accents. I loved everything about this audiobook. Highly recommend

One of the best audiobooks this year!

If the seas catch fire audiobook it is has to be one of the most outstanding audiobooks and listens of this year - and that’s saying a lot because there are some amazing books out there!  This has that magical combination where you have an amazing narrator an amazing author who have managed to find just that right combination.  We also get two MCs who have  their own issues -  in this case we have a feisty Russian and "mademan " Mafia style.  There’s absolutely no way this relationship should work and yet they manage to do it.

We get loads of very hot smexy times, a ton of feelz, and some really exciting action and adventure.   Add that to the fact that Michael Ferraiuolo can  do 89 accents for the whole cast of characters - all of them with varying accents and age groups - and you're are practically sitting in the front row of the m/m version of the Godfather!

This was absolutely amazing, and I cannot recommend this enough -  if I would give it more than six stars I would!  You have to go out and get this!

What a ride!!!

This has been one of the best books I've read this year and that's saying something because I've read a whole lot. Let me just say, that I am not a fan of mafia books but this was L.A WITT!!! I had to give it a shot! I can truly say I wasn't disappointed. I definitely got my money's worth!!!

This story was so well written, well constructed and every question was answered. No stone was left unturned. It had everything from a good romance story, mystery, suspense and comedy. The main characters had so much in common and they didn't know it but it all came full circle at the end.

And the narrator, he was phenomenal! All those accents? And the voice variation with the accents? He was great. I always knew who was talking. Gosh,. I'm sad that the story ended. As long as it was, I wish had more time to listen to their story. This was one for the records.

Kudos to the writter and narrator!

If you love mm romance ,You need to get this book, you won't regret it.

I never thought I'd like a mafia story.

I have never been interested – at all – in reading mafia stories, whether they be M/M, M/F or any other combination. But when I saw that Michael Ferraiuolo performed the audio version of If the Seas Catch Fire I had to listen to it. I first fell in love with his voice when I listened to Slow Heat by Leta Blake and then The Master Will Appear, also by L.A. Witt.

This is a long book to listen to at 13+ hours so it took me a few days to be able to finish it. I really wanted to listen to it straight through as soon as I started it but real life just wouldn't let this happen. To illustrate how much I liked this audiobook I have to tell you that I almost never re-read books, not even my most favorite ones, because I simply have too many books to read that I know will be good ones. When I first began enjoying audiobooks, only a year or so ago, I never dreamed that I'd want to listen to an audio book more than once. Well, I was wrong. While I haven't listened a second time to the complete book, I've listened to portions of the three books I mentioned above more than a couple of times.

I've been a fan of L.A. Witt's books for quite a while and have reviewed several of them here. Since I've only listened to this one (not read it) it's hard for me to gauge if the book would have had the same impact on me if I'd read it instead of listened to it. In order for an audiobook to be good the written story also has to be good, but I don't think it's at all a stretch to say that Michael's performance of this story had a huge impact on how much I enjoyed it

I won't restate the blurb/synopsis, it's accurate and good, but I will tell you that this story gave me chills in more than one way. It's an intriguing, suspenseful tale with murder and mystery. It's also an erotic love story about how two very unlikely characters come together and eventually admit that they care for each other after both of them thinking it was just a temporary arrangement for sex.

It's a mafia story so expect a lot of violence and blood; but if you take the time to listen to it I can almost guarantee that Michael Ferraiuolo's voice will captivate you just as much as it did me. Five stars for his performance isn't nearly enough.

I borrowed this book through KU and it was then a free listen through Audible.

well-written, intense and complicated story

This was a well-written, intense and complicated story. Sergei and Dom are complex, dangerous men who somehow find love while surrounded by and dealing out death on a regular basis. As killers immersed in such a brutal world, they are necessarily hard, but surprisingly vulnerable, capable of compassion yet frighteningly cold—in other words so very, very human. Additionally, I don’t know if it was a function of the life they lead or a shared character trait, but both men are very straightforward in how they view and deal with a relationship that shouldn’t be happening. Even when conflicted and doubting the wisdom of being together for their own reasons, there’s not a lot of vacillating, “should I-shouldn’t I” angst. They know it’s a bad idea, know they should end it and accept that they won’t until they have to, which is a refreshing change from the high angst back-and-forth inner monologues present in most conflicted characters.

The pacing and action was just right for the tone and intricacies of the steps that the players in this game were taking, and it was an engaging, dark and unexpectedly intimate story.
