Story
Seventeen years ago, two pink stripes on a pregnancy test changed Anne Sullivan’s life. She abandoned her artistic ambitions, married her college sweetheart before graduation, and - like the mother she lost in childhood - devoted herself to her family. To say she didn’t see the divorce coming is an understatement. Now, eager to distance herself from her ex and his lover, she moves with her troubled daughter, Katy, to the quaint bayside town of Potomac Point, where she spent her childhood summers.

Ellie, the youngest, has lived a nomadic life, leaving her siblings to care for their ageing mother. As their mother’s health deteriorates, will long-held secrets and childhood rivalries smash this family into pieces?

Summary
Life turns upside down for two sisters in Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jamie Beck’s emotional novel about how secrets and differences can break - or bind - a family.
Sisters Amanda Foster and Erin Turner have little in common except the childhood bedroom they once shared and the certainty each feels that her way of life is best. Amanda follows the rules - at the school where she works; in her community; and as a picture-perfect daughter, wife, and mother-to-be. Erin follows her heart - in love and otherwise - living a bohemian lifestyle on a shoestring budget and honoring her late father’s memory with a passion for music and her fledgling bath-products business.
The sisters are content leading separate but happy lives in their hometown of Potomac Point until everything is upended by lies that force them to confront unsettling truths about their family, themselves, and each other. For sisters as different as these two, building trust doesn’t come easily - especially with one secret still between them - but it may be the only way to save their family.

So glad to be me...and not like these characters!
It's scary how uptight, coddled, thin-skinned and thus, dysfunctional these characters are! It's so sad the people are really like this. The level of disrespect of others and self centeredness was enough to put me on alert for any of their behaviors which may be displayed in people around me.

Rambling Drama
I’m not sure why this book got so many 5 star reviews. It’s rambling drama with some unlikable characters and some unrealistic situations. And a narrator should never attempt to sing if they aren’t a singer!

Loved it
This book is somewhat of a departure for the author and it was fantastic. A wonderfully crafted story about a complicated family, warts and all. The story revolves around two sisters. They are so very different that it is shocking that they are related. They couldn’t be more different even if they put forth herculean effort. Amanda what always been a rule follower. When you follow the rules there are no surprises and people tend to like and accept you. Then there is Erin. She lives a total bohemian free spirit existence and dances to her own tune even at her sisters expense. Their relationship has never been easy and has caused tension in the family forever, but that is mostly due to their mother. When their father dies they all must come together to support each other as well as deal with all of the other things going on in their collective lives. The writing is stellar, the character development wonderful and so much drama. It brings out all kinds of feelings while reading. Very realistic, but the way things changed in one sentence with the mom left me scratching my head. No one would be so accepting nor should they be. Go treat yourself to a copy of his book. I am very much looking forward to the next in the series.

Overall a decent story
Amanda Foster and Erin Turner are sisters and about all they have in common is when growing up they shared a room. Amanda is the perfect daughter, wife, member of community and teacher .. she also is 7 months pregnant. Erin is the free-spirited daughter; she follows her heart living life as it comes - in love and career. Growing up their differences cause tension; they were like oil and water. Amanda was always jealous of her sister and her relationship with their father. Erin on the other hand was judged by their mother, a mother that seem to always defend Amanda.
A year after their father’s death Amanda, Erin and their mother will need to face family secrets, resentments, deceit, loss and betrayal that will draw the 2 sisters together to discover that have more in common allowing them to become more empathetic and acceptance of each other.
I felt If you Must Know was an adequately done novel, there were definitely thing I enjoyed in in the book .. it had some emotional moments and some of the characters you could connect with, I enjoyed the story being told by the 2 sisters but overall, it fell a little short. I don’t like stories where the parents play favorites with their children and this definitely showed with the mother. Ms. Beck does try to redeem that part of the storyline but by that time I really dislike the mother.
This was a combination eBook and audiobook, the audio portion had 2 narrators. I am very familiar with Thérèse Plummer who read Erin. Susannah Jones was new for me, she read Amanda. Both did an excellent job.
I did struggle with my star rating but will stick with 3 stars. There are 2 more books in this series. Since both the eBook and audiobook are available under Kindle Unlimited I will continue with hopes of a little stronger story telling.

Okay but Not Great
My problem with this book is the way the story was told. Every time there was a conversation it was broken up by minutes of thoughts going through Erin or Amanda’s head. Otherwise it was an okay book.

I Feel Better About Myself Now
Sometimes you just need a little perspective. Think you're having a bad day? Think you're family is a drumstick short of a Thanksgiving meal? Pop this little beauty of a story in and listen to the rolling train wreck of their lives. Sheesh. If they were horses they would have been "put out of their misery."
Two very different sisters and a mother that gives a whole new meaning to the term are facing the worst possible scenario...and not doing it well. We never really know how we'll react in a crisis until we're knee deep in it. Well, when the manure starts flying in these women's lives... let's just say they're not well equipped. They're also not so great at supporting each other in difficult times, either. Awesome.
But humans are amazing beasts. Some of us learn to swim when we find ourselves in the sewers. Amanda, Erin, and their mom are a great story of going from "this can't be happening" to "we own this." It wasn't a quick ride, or a fun one (but it was hysterically funny at times), but these women remind us how resilient, strong, and intrepid we were designed to be.
