Story
From the acclaimed master of action and suspense. The all-time classic. Millions of pounds in gold bullion are being pirated in the Irish Sea. Investigations by the British Secret Service, and a sixth sense, have bought Philip Calvert to a bleak, lonely bay in the Western Highlands. But the sleepy atmosphere of Torbay is deceptive. The place is the focal point of many mysterious disappearances. Even the unimaginative Highland Police Sergeant seems to be acting a part. But why?

Summary
The atomic submarine Dolphin has impossible orders: to sail beneath the ice-floes of the Arctic Ocean to locate and rescue the men of weather-station Zebra, gutted by fire and drifting with the ice-pack somewhere north of the Arctic Circle.
But the orders do not say what the Dolphin will find if she succeeds – that the fire at Ice Station Zebra was sabotage, and that one of the survivors is a killer….

My Mistake - Abridged
I never buy abridged but in a spree of Alistair Maclean purchases I wasn't paying attention. The story is good but - being abridged - not fully developed. I saw the movie years ago and this book didn't really add much to it. One of the few times I would say the movie was better (and it wasn't that good for the acting). If I find it unabridged I would buy it again.
The narrator, Michael Jayston, did a fine job by adding accents where required and reading each character with unique voices. No background noise or other distractions. Nice job. I'd definitely listen to books Mr. Jayston narrates in the future.

Son of a B#*&^!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION.
What disappointed you about Ice Station Zebra?
Abridged? Really in this day and age the only listing I could find turned out to be an abridged version, which I did not realise until AFTER I had purchased. Honestly abridged audiobooks should be a separate section that has 75 pop up warnings before you can enter it (maybe 76 just to be sure)
What was most disappointing about Alistair MacLean’s story?
It was ABRIDGED, I only got half the story, less than half in fact, less than half the action, less than half the intrigue. The only valid reason to listen to a 2 hour abridged version of anything is if I was on my death bed with less than 3 hours to live and REALLY wanted to hear that story before I croaked.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration was fine, but there was not enough of it, you know why? Because it was an ABRIDGED version.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Ice Station Zebra?
This version of the story had been cut so much it died on the operating table from loss of blood. It needed more not less.
Any additional comments?
I have never been unhappy with an Audible purchase until now; this should not have happened, I trusted the service too much and did not realise that crappy abridged version lived in the happy world of full unabridged audio I have come to know and love. Yeah I should have read more carefully but I did not because I had come to trust the service did not have these monstrosities in it's library.

Good, but abridged
This is a pretty good story. Pace is fast, in an old-school classic thriller. However, it's abridged, so I don't think you get all the subtleties on the characters.
