‘Charles Cumming has breathed new life into the spy novel’ BEN MACINTYRE

'The rightful inheritor of John le Carré's crown' OBSERVER

Lachlan Kite should have left fieldwork behind by now.

As director of covert intelligence agency Box 88, he’s at the apex of his espionage career. But when Martha Raine – a woman he hasn’t seen in twenty years – begs for his help, Kite finds himself back in the game, racing to avert disaster.

Kite must find Martha’s son, Max, who vanished in Athens with his girlfriend, Yasmine. But the couple aren’t just missing, they’re running for their lives. Two rival agencies are hunting them, both with orders to kill on sight.

Max and Yasmine are carrying a dizzying secret, one which could pull apart the foundations of the Middle East for a generation. If Kite fails to save them, the costs – both personal and professional – will be catastrophic.

The characters are well drawn and the plot well constructed. The mixture of complex personal relationships and complex plot lines makes the story interesting and engaging. I am keen to revisit the previous books in the series.

Icarus 17 is an engrossing read. It is even better than the previous books in the series.

Lots of people chasing and being chased across Europe.
Quite interesting as a travelogue but the politics are heavy handed, the story is slight and the characters are eye-rollingly cliched.
Still love the concept of Box88 but the first book is by far the best.

Travelogue without much story

Enjoyed all the previous in this series but really found this a tedious difficult listen. Very weak story, no real plot and the reader seemed to just make it worse as at times it was like something a year 6 child would read. Silly bits of inuendo and political dross/digs that just did nothing for the story and not needed. Dont know how I made it to the end but that was just as poor as the rest.
